The dormitory was silent, unbroken by noise as the two strangers sat. Discomfort and dislike had spread between them like a thin wall as soon as they met, unable to be broken yet, or ever if the strangers had anything to say about it.

The silence was thick, tension heavy on the skin. Until it was broken, by the loud slapping of rubber against wood, the gentle thud of a ball being dropped and pushed back up into the hand of the curly haired boy. Each bounce of the ball Simon constantly had with him was a loud crack against Baz's concentration, the page he attempted to study swam before his eyes as he was pulled away from it by the obnoxious sounds of the ball.

Simon was oblivious to the loudness he was causing that was breaking apart the silence that was existing. Over the years he had grown so attached and accustomed to hearing the red ball bounce alongside him, it felt like a part of him, like an extension of his own skin. He couldn't distinguish between the bouncing of the ball and the sound of his own breath in the air.

But Baz wasn't Simon. And Baz could hear every drop of the ball, every crack it made against the floor of their dorm room, and the loud noise it made. It hadn't always bothered Baz, although everything about Snow bothered Baz. But the ball hadn't bothered him much, especially as they were rarely in their room at the same time. But this time Baz needed to study, and Simon had nothing better to do than sit on his bed, staring off into space and bouncing his unrelenting red ball.

Each sound it made sounded louder than the last, until Baz sat back exasperated after staring at the blank page for so long. He turned to glare at Simon, and Simon continued to stare off into space as his mind continued to fold and reflect inwardly. Baz sighed loudly, and stared at the ball as it ricocheted off the floor and back into Simon's hands, 1, 2, 3, 4 more times.

Baz's hands clenched at his side as his jaw worked and clenched together, teeth almost grinding in frustration. Snow was, of course, oblivious, Baz thought, oblivious to fucking everything that boy is and always will be. Baz stood up, his chair scraping back uncomfortably loud, and Simon finally snapped back into the room he was in, his eyes coming to focus on Baz's expression, anger pouring off of him in giant hot waves that crashed onto Simon.

"What..." Simon began, his voice quiet and trailing off as Baz stalked over to his bed in silent rage.

Baz made it over to him in 4 long strides, his body moving silently across the room, until he was inches away from Simon.

"Do you know how infuriatingly annoying you are? You, Simon Snow, the worst Chosen One that has ever been chosen, are the most annoying person I've ever fucking been in contact with," Baz snatched the ball from Simon's limp hand, "and don't even get me fucking started on this ball."

Baz turned sharply to the left and faced the window that lived between Simon and Baz's beds, and flung his arm back with so much force it almost hurt, and he hurled the ball out of the window and down onto the campus grounds, a distant spot of red barely visible among the sea of green.

"What... but... what?!" Simon's mouth was agape as he stared at Baz, until his brows furrowed in anger, "You're an asshole."

"Yeah, and you're a major pain in my ass, tell me something I don't know," Baz sighed, and walked back to his desk to continue studying. The silence felt warm around him as he fought back a smile over his blank sheet of paper.

Simon gazed around the room, feeling almost empty, having nothing to do but stare at Baz's hunched body over his desk, his broad shoulders moving underneath his shirt. Simon's eyes were trained onto Baz, until he blinked his mind away from thoughts he never allowed himself to think.
Simon's skin grew hot from his own thoughts, and the room felt too warm on his skin, the air burning him.

"I'm- uh... I'll be back in a while." Simon stammered out, and strode towards the door.

"What about me tells you that I care, at all?" Baz didn't bother looking at Simon as he pulled open the heavy door and walked out.
