the wavering woods

Tyrannus Basilton Grimm-Pitch was up to something.  Skulking in the Wavering Woods, his eyes shifting around him to keep his happenings private. Simon stood and watched on the outskirts of the woods, and then delved into action to follow him.

The forest was practically breathing around Simon as he stepped into it, following several metres behind Baz's careful treads. The thing about Watford that fascinated Simon, made him long to be back there every second he was away, was that everything felt alive, breathing, all the buildings and grounds seemed to feed off of the same beating heart. Simon could feel the heart pulsing through his feet as he gingerly took quiet steps into the Wavering Woods, following the footsteps left from Baz's descent into the darkness.

Simon's hand twitched by his side where the hilt of his sword sat, forever being a comfort to Simon. Every crunch of the loud leaves lying on the ground, every snap of tree branches had Simon's nerves shot; his hand itched to wield his sword, to swing into the darkness. He could feel someone around him, moving so fast all he felt was wind sailing past him, and the gentle whoosh of something moving around.

"Snow." Simon heard from behind him and pivoted sharply, pulling his sword out of its sheath and holding it steadily in front of him (despite his fearful shaking that threatened to show in his mannerisms.)

"Baz, what are you doing out here?" Simon clenches his jaw, steadying himself to face Baz's figure leaning against the wide tree that shrouds Simon and Baz against the starry night.

"What are you doing here Snow?" Baz sighed heavily, and Simon was suddenly aware of Baz's slumped figure leaning against the tree, instead of his usual cockiness that supported him. The blood was drained from Baz's face (well even more than usual), and his eyelids drooped low on his eyes.

"Baz? Are you... okay?" Simon felt and heard the concern in his voice and almost recoiled from it, knowing how Baz would react to it (rudely).

Simon was startled as Baz slid down to sit at the base of the tree, "I don't think so Snow, not right now. So you can go, and we'll almost definitely pick this fight up later." Baz said dismissively, flicking his hand and letting fire flash from his fingers to land on the ground. The fire begins to pick up and Simon stamps it out.

"You're fucking flammable Baz," Simon snarls, "don't fucking do that."

"What, Snow, do you care?" Baz sneers up at him, remaining sarcastic even when looking sickly and weak. He continued to flicker out fire from his hands, lighting up most of the forest around the two boys.

Simon looked around at the growing flames in panic, "yes, no, I don't know, I'd rather kill you myself than have you kill yourself!" Simon stalked forward to crouch down in front of Baz.
"Come on, we have to go, I won't let you do this." Simon goes to grab Baz to pull him up and Baz growls at him, Simon recoiling away.
"Baz don't be this fucking stubborn, come on."

"Leave me, Snow, I don't want you to get me out of here. I don't want to be saved from this shit, these are my flames, this is all I am."

"You're also highly flammable," Simon snaps.

"Stop," Baz fixes his panicked eyes on Simon's face, and Simon can see the anger and pain existing within there, and he pushes his own confusion away from what was destroying Baz, to try and help him more.

The flame rises above the boys as Baz becomes more agitated, struggling with dialogue within himself, struggling with demons that were eating him up. Simon glanced around and couldn't see anything but fire, an orange yellow red wall that surrounded the boys from the greater world. Simon could feel the heat radiating around them, and desperately searched for a way out.

"Baz," Simon said, panic continuing to leak into his voice as he crouched closer to lean his hands on Baz's shoulders, and looked into Baz's vacant eyes as he continued to reflect inwardly.

Simon couldn't focus on anything but Baz, and the fire that raged within him and outside of him, and he couldn't stop himself from doing the one thing he saw that could stop Baz.

"Snow, leave-" Baz began and was cut off by Simon's lips on his. And then they were kissing, but they weren't. Baz was sitting confused, overwhelmed by what was happening. It was finally happening, Simon Snow was kissing him, Simon Snow kissed HIM, Tyrannus Basilton Grimm-Pitch. He could die happily, which he almost was going to.
Simon sat back sharply on his heels, feeling relief curse through his body as the flames died suddenly. Baz's eyes searched Simon's face as both of their chests heaved.

"Was that... okay?" Simon said, thankful for the darkness as heat crept into his face. He was also thankful for Baz's reclaiming of the fire around them.

"Shut up, Snow," Baz sighed and reached up to grab Simon by his shoulders and pulled him forcefully down to connect their lips once more. Baz forces himself to separate from Simon, "wait does this mean you're gay?"

"Now you need to shut up Baz, don't overthink it. I don't know, but I'm not thinking about it," Simon gripped the back of Baz's neck and pulled them back together to deepen their kiss.

The forest seemed alive in an entirely new way, fires raging now within the chests of both Simon and Baz, as they continued to ignore everything around them, focussing entirely on each other (but what was new?)
The Wavering Woods were quiet around the boys, keeping their secret safe from the school that had welcomed the two boys into its warmth. The stars glinted down at Baz and Simon, remaining distant and comforting in the dark night.
