Baz could smell the breakfast from his bedroom, and he could hear his big family clamouring downstairs, the sound carrying through his wide and open home. Baz had been up for hours, sitting at his desk and studying, soft classical music coming through the speakers he had inbuilt into his walls.

Now he sat back, rubbing his fingers softly into his eyes. He didn't always study in the mornings, but last night he had focussed on his violin playing and had let his studies drift away from him.

"Basil? Are you awake?" His mother's voice drifted upward into his room.

"Yes, I'm awake."

"Okay, well, come down for some breakfast."

Baz pushed his chair back and stood up, stretching his arms up to the ceiling until he heard several joints pop back into place, a heavy sigh leaving his body. He made his way downstairs just as his sister walked past, her hands running through her hair. Baz leant against the doorframe and spoke to his mother, "What's going on?"

"Your sister is annoyed that I'm making her get ready for school, don't let it concern you. Sit down, I'll get you some food. You want eggs?"

"Yes please," Baz said, walking to the coffee machine to pour himself a cup, and taking a long sip.

"What time did you wake up this morning, Basil?" His mother gave him a long appraising look as she placed the plate in front of him on the table.

"Uh... 5," Baz mumbled, his mouth already full of egg and toast.

"5?! Why?"

"I had to study."

"Basil..." his mother groaned at him, "Sleeping is just as important as your study, you have to take care of yourself, okay?" She placed a hand on the top of his head and gazed down at him. "I'm your headmaster, I love school and I think it's important for you, but you're my son first. You need to take care of yourself."

"Yes, Mum," he smiled up at her, "I know. I'll come right home and go to bed today."

"Okay, you cheeky bugger," she ruffled his hair slightly and leant down to kiss him gently on his widow's peak, "I love you."

"I love you too."

"Now, get ready for school and then get to the bus stop." With a final sweeping glance around the room, she left, her long hair trailing behind her, and her perfume lingering in the air.

Baz finished eating his breakfast, the voices of the other members of his family fading in and out of his consciousness, as his mind wandered; to his studies, to a particularly difficult piece that he hadn't yet mastered. His mind felt so full, everything else faded away.

**************

"Ah, Mr Grimm-Pitch, how nice of you to bless us with your presence."

"You know, I did think, I should probably hurry to detention... then I realised I didn't actually care, hence why I'm in detention," Baz grinned at the teacher sitting behind the desk at the front of the classroom, and she rolled her eyes.

"We both know that isn't true, Basil, now take a seat."

His eyes scanned the room quickly, the few tables in the classroom filled with delinquents, other people who hadn't finished homework, had been late to class one too many times, had talked back, had sworn in the hallway. All those students who had done the wrong thing, filling all the seats... except for one.

A seat in the middle of the classroom, one lone seat situated next to a blonde haired boy, who looked like being in detention was the last place he wanted to be. Baz smirked and lazily strolled to the seat, pulling it back slowly, letting the metal legs drag against the floor to make a loud scraping noise, which the boy physically reacted to, his hands knotted into fists.
