Ethan Wellers was a successful businessman. Had a nice car, nice house, in fact he was driving in his nice car to his nice house on the night of September 14th 2008. He had just left an important meeting to get him more money to buy more nice things. He was driving very fast though. So fast he almost missed her, almost.
A little girl with long black hair and pale skin. She looked like a demon from afar. He almost ran right into her. Then as she came into view he saw a thumb stuck in her mouth, and a stuffed rabbit under her arm. She was dressed in an oversized shirt and cut off pajama pants. Ethan Wellers pulled to the side of the road to consult the child.
"Hello?" He ventured cautiously, only a few yards from the girl. She didn't even notice him. He crept closer. "Hello? Girl! What's your name?" She turned her head slowly and looked at him confused. Why did he want to talk to her. She should never talk to strangers. Stranger danger, that's the rule.
"I'm Mr. Wellers. What is your name?" He was right by her side now. Crouched all low to see her face. Blue eyes pierced the black of the night.
"I'm Lucy." The girl finally made eye contact with Mr. Wellers. "I'm not supposed to talk with strangers," she said matter of factly. Then returned her gaze back to the passing cars of the highway.
"I'm not a stranger, we've just met." The man tried to reason with the girl, he needed her to trust him. "Can you tell me what you're watching for?"
"Mama said she'd be right back. She promised. She never breaks her promises." The girl never took her eyes off the road. Car after car zoomed by. Never the one she was looking for. Mama would come back, she knew she would. It was Lucy's birthday after all. She'd never lie on her birthday.
"When did your Mama leave?" Mr. Wellers knew this was a long shot. How could such a young child recognize the time.
"She left me when the sky was blue." Lucy glanced up seeing the now black sky. Then she quickly returned back to the road. She didn't want to miss Mama's car when it came.
"That was quite some time ago," Mr. Wellers was distraught. How could someone leave a child on the side of the highway. "Why don't you come with me. I'll help you find your Mama." He held out his hand to Lucy who looked at it it reluctantly. She was getting tired of standing in the gravel.
"Do you promise?" Lucy knew if she made him promise that he wouldn't be able to wriggle his way out of the situation. Promises were permanent.
"I promise." And that was the second promise of the night. He didn't intend to break it but sometimes things just happen.
New story!!
Also I know I've used this picture a lot but it kinda inspired Lucy so... Deal wid it.
