"Right through here." A large man holds open the door in front of us, dressed in a grey button up with a plethera of badges decorating the breast, and a laminated pass that showed him as important hanging from his neck. Pete, Patrick, and I step through the door to what looks like a sitting room, furnished with big couches, and a TV on the wall. I spot a mini fridge in the corner next to another door, but other than that, there's no one else in the room. The door behind us closes and Pete stretches his arms above his head.
"Sorry about that. Conner gets a little too serious about his job sometimes, but what can you do?" He shrugs and flops down on one of the couches. Patrick sits on the one opposite him, gesturing for me to do the same. I bring my legs up and rest them on the coffee table. "God, I've missed this place." Pete grins and stares up at the ceiling.
"Did you guys spend a lot of time here before?" Patrick chuckles beside me at my question. I turn slightly so I can look at him. He plays with the ends of his sleeves, smiling softly.
"We practically lived here for a while, once we got on a roll the producers wouldn't let us leave until we were falling asleep on our feet. Pete laughs lightly and I soon follow suit.
The door brusts open with the energy of a guy with a giant grin and bright eyes. "Pete! Patrick! It's about time, it took you forever to get here!" He launches himself on Pete, not really hugging him, so much as just sitting on him.
Pete grunts under the man sitting on him. "Joe..." He smacks the leg of Joe, clad in black skinny jeans. Patrick just laughs beside me. I find myself smiling too, looking up at the grown men, wrestling like children on the couch opposite me.
"Good to see you, Joe. We missed you." Joe grins and hops off Pete to plop down on the couch and pull Patrick into a side-hug.
"Aw, Pattycakes, it's been too long." He grins and his eyes land on me. "And of course the new addition to the family!" He breaks away from Patrick and comes around to sit next to me. "I don't believe we've been formally introduced." He sticks out his hand,"Joe Trohman, the best fro in town right here." His grin widens as I take his hand and shake it once.
"Lucy, nice to meet you." He opens his mouth to say something else but the door opens again and a buff guy with ginger hair comes in. He offers a sheepish smile, much different from the energetic attitude of Joe.
"Hey, Andy." Pete shifts into a sitting position and pats the cushion beside him.
"Hi guys, we missed you." Pete slings his arm around Andy.
"We missed you too. It's great being back in the city, especially now that we have Lucy here." I look down to hide my blush, but Joe taps my chin to make me look back up.
"Aw, she's blushing. Pete, who knew you were so good with the ladies." Pete rolls his eyes as I swat away Joe's hand. Andy breaks into a grin at our quarrel.
"I'm Andy. Y'know I didn't quite believe it when I heard Pete and Patrick adopted. How are they doing so far?" I chuckle as I look at Patrick for a moment to see him messing with Joe's hair above my head.
"About as well as you'd expect." I giggle as Pete makes a face at me.
"Hey!" Pete interjects,"We aren't that bad." I roll my eyes.
"I guess." I fake a sigh.
"I'm your favorite, right?" Patrick looks over at me with a childish grin.
I shrug and look around for a moment. "I dunno... I kind of like Andy." Andy smiles and gives me a high five. Joe scoffs beside me.
"What about me?" He asks, looking genuinely offended.
"Eh. I guess you're a close second." He whoops and pumps his arm.
"I'll take it!" I can't help my smile as Joe high fives Andy as well.
"As you legal guardians, I can speak for both of us in saying, we are deeply offended." Pete presses a hand to his chest and falls against the back of the sofa.
The rest of the day is spent like that. All five of us joking around, Joe tells us about his new girlfriend, Marie. This leads them to of course ask me about a possible boyfriend. I quickly try to shut that conversation down, but end up hiding my face as Pete and Patrick ramble on embarrassing things about Echo and I. Then they launch into a description of my art, which I had not kept up on. The whole experience reminds me of overly-proud parents, and though it's uncomfortable for them to brag about me, I feel like I'm truly part of a family now. The thought makes me smile as I engage in a separate conversation.
Eventually the boys' manager comes in and tells Pete and Patrick they have something to attend to. He sends them a sideways glance that Pete doesn't notice, but I see Patrick tense at. I try to push the image aside as Joe begins to tell me all the things we could do without the dads keeping us in check. My smile finds its way back onto my face.
He starts off by taking me into the recording room. Andy follows us, wandering into a separate room behind glass. Joe picks up a guitar hanging on the wall and plucks a few string. I make myself comfortable on a stool at what looks like a control panel for audio. I look over at Andy and see my smile up at me softly. I start to twist for a moment, but he waves me over and I quickly hop off, happy to hang out with him more. He's a bit quiet in a way that makes me relate.
"Are these yours?" I ask, looking down at the drums before me. He holds up two drum sticks and nods, smiling again. "I've always wanted to play drums." I say quietly.
"Want to try them out?" I brighten at his offer, looking up with wide eyes.
"Really?" He nods and gestures to the seat behind them. He then proceeds to give me basic instructions on what had always seemed like simple beats to me.
I'm eventually able to keep up a pattern and Andy is grinning ear to ear as I end with an epic symbol crash and look up to see Pete, Patrick, and Joe cheering, exaggerating their whoops and claps. I stand and take a bow before meeting them out in the other room.
I can't help the constant grin on my face throughout the rest of the day. It had been a long while since I had a day this good.
