Sorry for the cringey title. Deal wid it.
Over the weekend I snapped back to the reality of my situation. I wasn't anything special. I was just Lucy. The girl with clothes that don't fit, the girl who lives in the home, the girl who only has to worry about herself.Pete came over Saturday and tried to get Jenny to call me downstairs. I had used my chores as an excuse and Jenny told him to come back on Sunday. I 'wasn't feeling well' on Sunday though. Ms. Newbury let me sit out lunch. A vomiting girl probably wouldn't get any of us adopted.
James isn't at school Monday so I spend the day in silence. Not that anyone would notice the already-quiet girl not talking. Ms. Liva calls me to her classroom during lunch, which I am grateful for. I really hate lunch. I have no one to sit with and I never eat anyways. It's kind of just an inconvenience in my day.
While in her classroom, Ms. Liva discusses selling my work. The thousand dollar offer was taken off the plate so I opted for the second best at seven-hundred. I signed a couple of things and I'm told that the money will be mailed to me in a couple of weeks.
After lunch my last two classes are a blur of boring lectures and excessive homework. Tuesday is more of the same, though James is here. He sits next to me in math and we sit in the field during lunch and fifth period. We sit quietly, occasionally commenting on the music playing through his ear buds. After a while he says something that catches my attention.
"I have to move soon." He says it quietly, like he's sure if I don't hear it'll just disappear. I do hear though, and I guess that's the problem.
"When?" I don't ask why or with who or where. These things don't matter. He'll be gone, why does any of it matter?
"Next month."
"Oh."
More silence. That's all this week has been so far. Silence. It seems to get more and more peaceful, yet suffocating whenever it takes over the air.
"It's only to Nevada. I'm sure I can come visit winter break." He gives me a weak smile that I try to return. I fail to feign my happiness and soon I feel his hand cover mine. Butterflies eat away at my stomach.
"I'll miss you." I lean my head over on his shoulder.
"Me too." He lays his head atop mine.
Then the bell rings and we head to class again.

Wednesday starts fairly normal. James and I have made a habit of sitting next to each other on the bus. He's much better than me at making friends so sometimes this group of sophomore boys sit next to us. I don't mind them. One of them- I think his real name is Ethan, everyone calls him Echo. Echo is probably one of my new closest friends. When James was absent he sat in the seat across the aisle from me and we talked a little. Now whenever we see each other he'll give me a high five or a smile. It's nice to have friends.
English is boring, as usual. Something about phonics or homophones- I really wasn't listening. Then math, we're given our assignment and James gives me the right ear bud and puts on some band called Bring Me The Horizon.
We finish quickly. Mr. Brown has been surprisingly easy on us the last couple of weeks. James uses his pen to write on us for the last couple minutes of class. He doodles little symbols on both of our hands for a few minutes before scribbling something hurriedly on the side of his hand then doing to same to me. When he's done he lets me look.
'Jucy'.
"What's that supposed to be?" I smile at his childish expression.
"It's James and Lucy. Our friendship name." He chuckles a little at his pun and I just shake my head. He then proceeds to scribble our new name all over my binder and at the top of his math paper.
"You're really dumb, you know that?" He rolls his eyes at me. After a second his gaze flicks behind me. I glance over to shoulder to see a familiar office aid taking to Mr. Brown. He takes a slip of paper from Echo and he winks over at me before leaving. He checks the name on the slip before calling out the name.
"Lucy. You have an appointment. You'll be leaving for the day, take your stuff." He holds the paper out impatiently. I hop out of my chair and take it from him, examining it as I go back to the desks James and I were occupying.
"What appointment?" James gives me a confused look that I return. I didn't think I had anything planned soon at either the dentist or the doctor's office. I shrug.
"Guess I'll see you tomorrow."
"Bye, Luce." He gives a small wave.
"Bye, Jay." I give him one last smile before leaving him. I don't have anything other than my binder today so I don't have to bother going back to my locker. Any homework I have I'll just have to make up tomorrow. I walk the empty corridors towards the main office. My sneakers pad quietly down on the tiles. I make a sharp left to the yellowed door that leads to the office.
Inside is the last person I had expected to see. Pete.
I just can't seem to get away from the guy. He smiles at me when he sees me. I glare at him. The secretary, of course, doesn't notice any of this. She just smiles at us and informs me that Pete has signed me out and that I'm free to go. He grins at me and takes my binder.
"Let's go kiddo."
"Whatever." He chuckles and I roll my eyes. I can't be necessarily mad at him but I'm irritated, let's say, that he took me out of class. Especially when he's not even my legal guardian. "Isn't this illegal or something. You're not even related to me." I point out the obvious fact as we near the exit.
"Not quite. Jenny called and said that I was going to pick you up."
"Wow, thanks, Jenny." look up to the ceiling and give it a sarcastic look while Pete holds open the door.
"C'mon, dork. You can't hate us forever." When he says that I look down at the street in front of us and see Patrick leaning against their car.
"Why'd you even take me out of school anyways." We make our way to the car where Patrick opens my door for me and Pete hands me my binder from the front seat.
"Because," Pete begins. "We couldn't talk to you all weekend." He gives me a look.
Patrick butts in, to my rescue. "She was sick." He looks over at Pete who holds up his hands in surrender. "We wanted to talk to you about something. We wanted to do it in person." He and Pete smile at each other, somewhat fidgety.
"And this is gonna take all day." I look at them skeptically.
"Yes." Pete says simply.
"What is it then?"
"Not here." Patrick answers and pulls the car away from the school.
I'm really excited for the next part. I'm gonna write it probably right now. Ok, continue.
