Seventeen Years Later
I woke up to the sun's rays peeking through my bedroom curtains. I squinted my eyes and sat up on my bed resting against the headboard. Today was the day that Evan will come back from England. He was gone for two weeks, since his grandmother passed away, to take care of his mourning mother. I had to stay back with the children. Our eldest, Nina is 16, our second eldest Ethan who is named after my brother is 14, and Theo is 10.
These past two weeks have been crazy without Evan, I hate waking up alone. As for work, I haven't been working in the field for the past 5 years. I needed to focus on the kids. I felt guilty for not being part of their childhood as much, they were basically raised by my parents and Evan as busy as he was. After my maternity leaves, I would be flying around the world catching nationally wanted people.
So now the agency gives me applications to look over and then I go to the recruitment office to make selections for potential agents. I also get to train the novice agents. Even though I miss being an active agent who gets to travel all over the world. I am extremely happy about spending time with my children and enjoy working as a senior training and recruitment officer.
"Good Morning." My sleepy ten year old, Theo, shuffled in to my room.
"Hey you. You woke up nice and early." I said surprised.
"I though dad would be home by now." He said sleepily.
"Oh, he won't be home till later in the afternoon." I said as I turned the news on. "Here, come sit with me." I patted on the bed.
He came and slipped into the warm sheets and snuggled with me.
"Due to extreme fog and bad weather conditions many flights, arriving and departing, have been cancelled in the GTA." The news anchor stated and the tv showed footage of the airport in Toronto.
"What?" I said in disbelief.
I quickly grabbed my phone and tried calling Evan, no answer. I began to send him a text but he beat me to it.
'Hey Love, my flight's been delayed. Not sure when I'll reach home.'
'Hi, I just heard. We miss you <3'
'Me too, I'll keep you posted. Send my love to the kids.'
'ok, love you'
'Love you <3'
"Is dad not coming tonight then?" Theo asked.
I sighed, "By the looks of it, I guess not. He said he'll let us know what happens." I looked at his sad face. "He also said he loves you guys." I kissed his forehead.
Soon enough my second eldest wandered into my room. "Morning." Ethan said and slipped in the sheets next to me.
"Good morning sweety." I gave him a kiss on the cheek. He looked just like his father. Theo on the other hand looked just like me. "So is Dad going to be here soon?" he asked. I shook my head.
"His flight is delayed." Theo answered.
The three of us finally got out of bed and went downstairs to the kitchen. I started making the omelette mix when Nina, who was clearly half asleep, wandered into the kitchen.
"Morning." She said quietly.
"Good Morning!" I said brightly and kissed her cheek. She was a perfect mix of both Evan and I. If she were to stand next to me, people would say how much we look alike. But if she were to stand with Evan, they'd say she's his carbon copy.
"I heard dad's flight got delayed." She rubbed her eyes and sat at the breakfast table.
"Yah, he isn't sure when he'll be coming home." I started the stove. "I thought you were going to make breakfast this morning?" I teased Nina. I knew she was up all night doing a research paper, she wanted to make breakfast this morning like she usually does on the weekends.
