The rain and pure moisture of Venus made trekking through the jungle difficult. The mud on the ground was sticking to the bottom of my boots as I ran through the foliage. "I just wanted to pull up a bit of information on the enemy that our friend might be referring to."
"Alright shoot."
"Reports of the patrols that had gone to this planet all talk about a race of machines called the Vex. Heavily armored, possess powerful weaponry, and by all accounts, they can teleport. Great."
"Great indeed," I replied pushing some plants out of the way. The rain continued to fall from the sky as the foliage seemed to get only denser. The mud then began to start sticking to the bottom half of my chest plate. I then started hearing the noises of the bugs and other animals native to the planet. This entire world had something beautiful and mysterious about it. The plants were massive in comparison to those trees that I had seen on my way back home from the bar from last night.
Trees that seemed to extend nearly twenty-two meters into the cloudy sky above; the darkness wiped out everything, but Venus felt alive as if it was happy that humanity was nearly destroyed all those years ago. It could now grow and evolve on its own, without human intervention. The rain began to pour down harder, falling so hard in fact that I could not see a meter ahead of me. It was almost like a dense fog instead of a downpour. "So this is where her coordinates were sent from?" I asked Ghost.
"Yeah, we're about twelve kilos from the location."
"TWELVE KILOMETERS?!" I exclaimed.
"My apologies sir, but I couldn't get a transmat location in the area where the signal was sent. It's like the area is being jammed."
"Okay, I guess we just keep going."
As we continued walking through something made me stop dead in my tracks. A large footprint was on the ground in front of us, nearly four meters across the widest point in diameter. "Ghost?"
I heard nothing in response. I think that he's just as scared as I am.
The holes where the beast left its toes were nearly a meter thick. Whatever it is, it's big, and it's heavy. "Do you have any idea as to what made those footprints?" I asked as we continued, following this creatures warpath through the dense jungle.
"Yeah, but they're supposed to be extinct."
"What were they?"
"They were, to be simple, dragons, giant winged beasts of immense strength and wisdom called the Ahamkara."
"Were they here when we first arrived?" I asked pulling out the paragon and popping a cylindrical clip into the top of the gun. The weapon began to glow a bright orange. I continued walking through the jungle with my finger close on the trigger shaking slightly. A bright flash of light lit up the dark sky for a moment, and a loud thoom echoed through the heavens. I had no idea as to what would come next. A loud roar echoed through the jungle, and of course, it came from just ahead of me. The sound shook the trees around me and some of the animals that could fly fled from the direction of the sound.
"The coordinates go right ahead."
"I figured."
We kept walking down the path of devastation for the next several hours. Some trees knocked down seemed to indicate a struggle between the beast and whatever it was chasing or running from. But the question now remains, if the animal was running away from something then what? What could a dragon have to fear on this planet? Or was there a creature much stronger and smarter that hunted them? Perhaps in some of the more urban centers of Venus would tell me more once I got there.
