I woke in the same position I had fallen asleep in. My parents held me tightly against them as if they were afraid to loose me. I wasn't sure why, because I didn't plan on going anywhere anytime soon, but I could understand their worry.
Kira moved the covers off my head and kissed the top of my head. “How are you feeling?” she asked.
“Better.” I answered. “I should be alright now. I'm sorry for the scare.”
“Don't apologize for something that isn't under your control.” Alison told me. “It will just make you feel worse.”
“I already feel bad. How can it get worse?” I muttered.
“By thinking you burden us at all by sleeping in our arms.” Alison smiled. “If you did this every night...” She trailed off in her own thoughts and I couldn't help but laugh.
“How are the Daybreakers supposed to take us seriously?” I laughed.
“Who cares, no one fucks with our daughter.” Kira said.
I smiled then that eventually turned into a frown. “I've never been so scared before... I thought that I wouldn't be afraid of anything but it was almost... instinctive.”
“It was.” Alison said.
“But you guys-.”
“The fear of loosing someone close to us allows us to fight the fear of a Daybreaker. The bravery we've learned to hold closest to us allows us to fight a Daybreaker.” Kira said.
“You've never been afraid before.” I muttered.
“I was afraid last night.” She said as her arms moved from around both of us, to wrapping around my midsection where she pulled me against her and held me tightly. “I could honestly say I was terrified.”
“I'm sorry... I should have lashed out with my thoughts and called you.” I told her. I felt ready to cry again but Alison put her hands on my face gently and raised my head to look at her.
“Don't apologize.” She smiled sweetly.
I managed to smile.
I sat in the dinning room for breakfast with Emma, Rose and Alice along with a few other Shades, Fairies, and Spriggans. Emma put a disgusting amount of maple syrup on her pancakes. I knew she liked sweets but it was still pretty gross. Alice and Rose were quietly drinking their glasses of blood.
I enjoyed laughing and joking with the 'servants' as most people called them. But they were just willing additions to the court. They were a funny group of people.
Lillian sat beside Alice and was joined in happily with the conversation.
Suddenly, for whatever reason, one of the younger Shade boys stood up, slamming his fist against the table, hitting the end of a fork as he shouted as the person across from him.
The fork went flying through the air, and hit the tray Bells was carrying, shattering a small glass. I was grateful Alice was fast, but as she spun around, she knocked her own glass over, letting the blood spray out on the table in front of me and Emma. But she did manage to catch Bells before she fell.
“Oh dear.” Bells muttered.
“Are you hurt?” Alice asked.
“Just a scratch.” She answered. A small cut on the side of her face held a single drop of blood that dripped down her cheek. “I'll be fine.”
“I'm so sorry!” Called the Shade boy.
“It's not a problem.” Bells smiled as Alice helped her stand. Then the two of them began picking up the shards of glass and placing them on the tray.
