Lily was startled awake by the intense ringing of her phone. She nearly fell out of bed to get the device and answer, and she didn't care how groggy and annoyed she sounded. It was Kim on the other end of the line.
"Are you at home?"
Blinking slowly, Lily looked at her nude body. She turned to look at June, who was nude as well but still fast asleep. "No. June's. Why?"
"Nothing, nothing. I was thinking of coming over for a visit."
"Is something wrong?"
"Maybe we should talk."
"Maybe? Talk? About what?"
Kim sighed. "I think it would be better if we talked in person. Can I come over and see you at June's?"
"I mean, yeah, sure. Mom, what's going on?"
"Just don't go back to your apartment, okay? I'll come see you later."
"Uh, okay..." Lily frowned as the line cut off. Confused and tired, she tossed her phone to the pile of clothes on the floor. She ran a hand through her hair and exhaled messily. She was curious as to what her mother was going on about, but she was more concerned with how scared Kim sounded. Obviously whatever was on her mind was truly serious.
"Was that your mom?" June husked.
Lily turned. "Yeah. Sorry for waking you."
"It's okay. What did she want so early?"
"I don't know. She's coming over here later. And apparently I shouldn't go back to my apartment."
June lifted her head. "Why? Is something wrong?"
"I don't know that either. She sounded worried and scared. She's coming over here to talk to me about whatever it is. I really do hope nothing is wrong."
"What do we do?"
Lily sighed and laid back down. "Nothing. Wait. She didn't give me an exact time when she'd come. She only said later. Is that okay? That she's coming over here, I mean?"
"Yeah, of course. It must be serious if she'd rather come over here."
"Yeah... Well, hey. Let's not worry about it right now. My mom can overreact sometimes. I'm sure it's nothing too bad. What do you want to do today? We can watch movies, or go swimming, or something like that until my mom comes."
"A day in sounds nice. How about we get up, shower, then make breakfast? Then we can figure out what we'll do. I bet Christina is already up."
Lily burrowed into the pillows. "Can't we sleep in a little more?"
"You're stinking up my bed."
"Hey, half of these stains are yours."
June snorted and smacked Lily's shoulder in good fun. "Don't be gross. Come on, I'll make you whatever you want for breakfast."
Lily lifted her head from the pillows. "Anything? I know what I want..."
Flushing pleasantly, June rolled her eyes. She gave Lily a quick kiss then got out of bed. "I'm taking a shower. You can either join me or take one on your own. Your choice."
Shooting up in bed, Lily mumbled, "Did she just say join her?" Then she jumped and nearly sprinted to the bathroom. She stepped into the shower with June and laughed when June was caught off guard. They mostly bumped around each other and tried to take the warm spot beneath the water, but it was fun nonetheless. It was awkward intimacy.
