I’m still smirking because of Hook’s complement when I hear something. A twig breaking. It is such a small noise I almost think I’m mistaken. But after being attacked out of nowhere, I don’t take any chances. I grab Hooks arm to get his attention and when he looks like he is about to ask what’s wrong, I put my index finger against my lips. Smee and Tinkerbell haven’t noticed anything and they keep walking in the direction of the beach. Now I put my finger to my ear and luckily Hook understands what I’m saying.
Listen.
Then I hear the noise again, but now closer, not to be mistaken. Someone is out there. Hook places his hand on his sword but doesn’t draws it yet. I follow his example and take out the knife he gave me before we left.
Suddenly I hear another noise. Before I have the time to register what it is, Hook slams his body against mine and pins me to the ground. I hear something shooting past us and I know what it is.
An arrow.
Covered in Dreamshade I suppose.
For some reason I don’t find that disturbing. The only thing I can think about is Hooks body pressed against mine and the fact how safe he makes me feel. But then I notice his fast heartbeat and I’m snap back to myself.
Crap.
The lost boys found us, I’m positive.
And according to Hook’s face he thinks the same thing. Now my heart is beating too, and for once it has nothing to do with Hook, but with the fact that I’m staring death in the eyes. Again.
Hook gets up and helps me onto my feet and at the same time we start running into the direction of Tinkerbell and Smee. My legs are way shorter than Hook’s and I’m falling behind, until he grabs my arm and yanks me with him and I stumble behind him, trying to keep his pace.
My lungs burn with every breath and my heart hurts with every heartbeat. Soon we have caught up with the rest and I scream to them, even tough I’m not sure how I produced such a strong scream considering my burning lungs.
‘Go! Go!’
Is the only thing I scream to them and after just a confused glance from Tinkerbell and a terrified look from Smee, they run right after us.
I find myself running faster as I thought I could. I hear another arrow fly away and it ends up in the tree a few feet before me and I yank it out of its bark. At least I have some kind of weapon now. I lost my knife when Hook pushed me to the ground and I was so shocked that I forgot to pick it up before we fled.
We keep running but at some point the arrow attack stops. We run for what feels like another half an hour –but what probably is just minutes- before we all come to a stop at the same time. I turn around with the arrow in my hand as a weapon, but no one is behind us.
‘Are you okay? Did the arrow hit you?’ Hook ask concerned turning me around gently so I’m facing him. His eyes demand a direct answer.
‘No, no, I’m fine.’ I say between gasps for air. ‘What about you? Are you hurt?’
Hook shakes his head and I feel relieved he is okay. I would hate myself for the rest of my life if he would die saving me. I force my eyes away from him and look at the others.
Other than Smee’s bright red face and Tinkerbell’s suspicious behaviour, they are unharmed. I notice a few cuts on Tinkerbell’s underarm and I glance at mine, when I notice a little sting. It looks like the tree branches abused me, but I don’t make a big deal out of it. I won’t die of them, so it doesn’t matter.
