Say You Won't Let Go (Spoby Story)

Chapter VI

*Toby's POV*

I sit still on Spencer's couch while Lorenzo leaves the room. He noticed when I wasn't moving but didn't say anything. He knows my history with Spencer.

We both wait in silence for someone to cut the tension. I know it should be me since I did wait behind.

"Spencer, can we talk?" I ask nervously. I don't want her to kick me out.

"What about?" She asks, her voice small and fragile.

"I just want to apologise for what happened," I say with my eyes looking to the ground. When I lift my eyes she is looking at her feet.

Since she hasn't said anything I continue.

"That morning I was a wreck and I don't even know why I broke up with you. I kept over thinking things and I didn't think I was good enough for you. As I was driving to your house I thought about how better off you would be without me and I just didn't want to....." she cuts me off.

"You didn't think you were good enough for me? That is so much bull," she calls me out.

"I was in a really bad situation," I say, really meaning it.

"YOU were in a really bad situation? My dad had just been killed! I had just found out he had died and then you broke up with me!" She screams. Tears stain her cheeks and she doesn't bother to wipe them away. They fall one after the other on to her lap.

I stay silent. I know what I did was wrong but I didn't want to break up with her. Her mom told me to break up with her but I can't tell her that.

"I didn't have a choice," I mumble.

"Okay, Toby" she sighs.

"Really I didn't," I reply. I'm so close to telling her but I can't. Her mom would kill me.

"So the day before we broke up we were talking about getting married, having children and then you didn't have a choice but to break up with me? Okay," she says sarcastically. She wipes away her tears. She's not crying anymore but her cheeks are soaked. I stand up from my seat.

"I didn't!" I yell. "Do you think I would break up with you when I had an engagement ring for you?!" I scream. Oh shit. Why did I just say that?

"You what?" She whispers in shock. "You bought me a ring?"

"Well..... I.... I......" I mumble. I don't know what to say. I wasn't meant to tell her that.

"You were going to propose?" She says, standing up from her seat.

"I was but it never happened did it?" I say, blushing in embarrassment.

"Why did you break up with me then?" Spencer asks, taking a step towards me.

"I told you," I gulp. She does this to me. As soon as she comes close to me my throat goes dry and my hands go sweaty.

She is just centimetres away from me when I hear someone shout my name. Thank god.

"Toby?" Lorenzo shouts from outside the door. "Let's go!"

If she had kissed me I wouldn't have been able to stop her. I was never able to stop her.

"Coming!" I shout, taking a step back from Spencer.

"Well, I'll see you later." I say awkwardly.

"Yeah," she breaths.

I walk to the door and just before I open it I turn around to look at her again.

"Spence?" I whisper.

"Yeah?" She says, turning around. She must have been walking to her room.

"I did love you," I say before opening the door and exiting her small apartment.
