*Spencer's POV*
"Spencer?" My mom shouts up the stairs to me. My head is still pounding from last night and I know she wants to talk about what happened.
"Spencer," she says a minute later, this time outside my old bedroom door.
I left the ball as soon as I found out about Toby's secret. My mom told me about her deal with Toby. That's what he never went to jail and nobody knew about his crime.
"Mom, I really don't want to talk," I groan. The last thing I need is to start crying again. I only stopped sobbing an hour ago.
"I just wanted to let you know that Toby has been at the door, asking to see you," she says sympathetically. Her eyes are soft and sorrowful.
"I don't want to talk to him," I sniffle, feeling the tears begin to well up in my eyes.
"I said that you were asleep but he told me to give you something," she says, her eyes giving something away.
My mom always loved Toby although my dad didn't. They always got on but after my dad died she never wanted me to see him. I understand that now.
I can tell she feels bad for me but her eyes look sad as she hands me an envelope.
"Read it," she whispers as she hands me it. I wasn't going to. I was going to throw it straight into the trash but they way she said that and they way she is looking at me, makes my stomach churn.
She closes the door gently and I tear open the envelope. Inside is a piece of paper, neatly folded with writing on it, Toby's writing.
Dear Spence,
I'm sorry.
I know that saying sorry will never bring your dad back but I am. What happened that night was an accident, I never meant for it to happen.
That wasn't why I wrote this letter though. I wrote this letter to tell you a story. A story that I hope you will remember.
I was in school one day. This fat kid was being bullied beside my locker. I hated seeing him whimper as he tried to protect himself against the bullies harsh words and punches to his stomach.
I walked over, feeling brave. I told the bully to stop and stood in front of the poor kid to protect him. But the bully went for me after that day. Everywhere I went, the bully was there. He would punch me, kick me, make fun of me.
I was standing at my locker like a normal boy at school. In my locker was a note, saying I was to go to the motel. What you don't know is, the bully had put your name at the bottom of the note, it was signed by 'you' I thought.
I had a huge crush on you and wanted to ask you out for ages! So I went, to the motel and waited. I waited for over three hours not knowing that you weren't going to show up. I went to go back to my car but someone had covered it in paint. The windows were coloured in black, the tires were slashed and the windshield was smashed.
I was lucky that you actually did appear, even though it wasn't for me. You wanted away from your parents for the night, and I payed for your stay. We both shared a room and the next morning I was feeling brave. I kissed you.
Do you remember? You were wearing my shirt from the night before and you looked beautiful in it.
That was the day I realised I wanted to marry you. Sounds stupid right? But the way you helped me. You stopped the bullies from hurting me at school. You were my protection, my shield.
Spencer, I love you. I know I have rambled on for ages but I had to tell you that I don't want to spend another day with out you. But I also don't want you hating me for what I done. I will pay for it for the rest of my life.
In the envelope is something I bought the day your father died. I've had it all this time, hoping to give it to you one day. Just in case I don't see you again, you can have it. It's yours, I'm yours.
I love you.
Toby x
I read it over and over again. After my seventh time of reading the letter my hand is shaking and tears are streaming from my eyes.
I pick up the envelope and look inside. Inside is a ring. The ring he bought me and has kept all this time. I stare at it, it's beautiful.
"Spence?" My mom shouts from the other side of the door. I drop the ring onto my bed and she doesn't even wait for a response when she opens the door.
She races to my side and embraces me in a hug. I tremble in her arms, finding it hard to breath with how much I'm crying.
"Mom he.... he-" I try to explain what he wrote. She just shakes her head.
"I know, I know. I read it," she hushes, rocking me back and forth, trying to calm me down.
"You read it?" I ask, looking at her.
"He told me to," she whispers, pulling me back onto her shoulder.
