He pulled away slowly and then rested his forehead against mine, eyes closed. We sat like that for a couple minutes before I pulled away to look at him.
Here he was sitting I front of me. No longer engaged, but instead a free man. Well, as much of a free man as he could be, being the heir of the Huntzberger family business.
"What about your family?" I asked him. I couldn't help but wonder what his family thought of this whole situation. After all, Mitchum did see us together at lunch months ago, and he's not a stupid man. He must have known, with the fact that he has affairs all the time.
"What about them?" He asked back.
"Well...have you told them anything. They must know the engagement is off by now." I said.
"I haven't mentioned anything to them yet. But, you're right by now Odette must have said something about the engagement being called off. I'll probably being hearing from them soon." He said slightly annoyed at the thought off it. "But right now there's you, me, and...the baby." He finished lightly placing his hand on my stomach.
His eyes met mine and I could see the pure happiness inside him. This is what I had been hopping for. He wasn't upset. He was happy, to put it modestly. All I wanted to tell him that last night in the Tango Club was to leave Odette, to call off the engagement and stay with me. But at the same time in knew he had responsibilities to his family and the family business, and I knew they would never approve. They proved that at the first and only dinner I attended at their home. They still wouldn't approved...
"Hey Ace...What goin' on in there?" He asked gingerly.
"Just thinking." I said.
"About..." He said trying to draw it out of me.
"About how you're family will never approve of this. I mean, look how they acted when you brought me to dinner that night--" I started but then he cut me off.
"Screw them! I already proposed to you without their approval. You think they are going to have any influence over what I do now." He stated matter-o-factly.
"But--" I started but then got cut off again.
"Rory. I'm not going anywhere. That's it, got it?" He said grabbing my hands.
"Okay." I said. I wasn't going to try to argue the subject with him. He had made up his mind and I was perfectly fine with him choice. "You want something to drink?"
He smiled, "Sure and then we should get some rest since it's three in the morning."
"Sounds good." I laughed.
"I'll make breakfast later." He continued as I poured hot water into a cup with a teabag.
"Actually how about we go to Luke's." I asked. "I've been cooped up in here lately."
"Okay. Luke's it is." He agreed taking the cup that I offered him.
He finished his tea and then we headed to my bedroom where we entangled ourselves on my twin-sized bed. I took in the scent of him, savoring every moment that we had together. He wrapped his arms around me and held me to him, like he never wanted to let me go and then as I fell asleep I felt him kiss the top of my head and murmur "I love you Ace."
Then everything went black.
