This was an entry of mine in a short story contest we had during an event at school. The theme was "The last man on Earth is in a room and then, there was a knock on the door". I used to go in a Catholic school hence, the theme of the prose. Sadly, I did not win the contest but nevertheless, I enjoyed the experience of writing it.

During the First World War, the whole world was at risk. Different forces from different countries kept attacking each other. Many innocent humans were kept as hostage, many more were joined in war. Gunshots and explosions were everywhere. A quarter had already dead. Everyone who was still alive just waited until they were taken away from this misery. It seemed like it was impossible to bring peace back to the Earth. Everyone lost hope, except for one.
Amelia, daughter of King George V, was a servant of the Lord. Before the war, she would always go to church, praying and offering food to the needy. She kept faith and courage in God. She believed that one day, peace will reign once more, and all will be well. She kept praying along with her mother, her older brother Logan, and the children and elderly who were in their care in the palace. They prayed every hour, hoping that everyone was and will be safe, even though it seemed hopeless.
Because of Amelia's kind, hopeful, and faithful personality, everyone who knows her were also given hope. They tried to keep their faith as strong as hers, but failed.
As Amelia was sewing the toy for one of the children, the palace was surrounded by enemies. They were trying to break in. And so, as the son of the King, Logan had been assigned to lead the soldiers, while the Queen made sure every child and elder was hidden and safe.
Amelia wanted to help them, but Logan pulled her up from her seat, pulled one of the hidden levers in the room, and then a secret passage way was revealed.
Logan immediately pulled Amelia inside but Amelia protested. "Logan, please! I cannot just stay here while you and mother are out there! I promise I will not get out of your way, but please, let me help you!" she pleaded as tears stream down her.
"Amelia, I will not let you do that. I promised Father that I will keep you safe at any cost." He faced Amelia and softly wiped the tears from her eyes. "Please, Amelia, stay here. For you need to be safe." Amelia breathed deeply and finally nodded.
"But promise me you will come back for me. Promise me that we will be complete again. Promise me that everything will be alright." Amelia looked his brother in the eyes. Logan hugged her dear sister and kissed her lightly on the forehead.
"I promise, everything will be alright." Logan let go of her and immediately ran outside the passage, closing it, leaving Amelia alone.
God our Father, please keep them safe. Please bring peace in this world once more. She prayed as she sat near the flamed torch, keeping her warm and brightening the passage.
For every explosion she heard, for every gunshot, and for every cry she hears, she prayed. Prayed for the souls of those who passed away, and prayed for those who were still alive. Tired from waiting and crying, she fell asleep as more explosions were heard.
When dear Amelia woke up, she heard nothing but silence. She immediately jolted up and grabbed the flaming torch that was near her. She tried to push the wall where the passage opened, and it did open.
And when it did, tears streamed her face once more. Because the moment the wall opened, he immediately saw Logan, lying on the floor, bathed in his own blood.
Amelia ran to his brothers body and hugged it. Silently crying, and trying not to imagine the pain her brother might have been through.
Lord. Please take care of my brother. May his soul rest in peace, for I am safe and well. She kissed his brother gently in the forehead and hugged him once more before standing up and covering his brother's body with a cloth near her.
"I'll be back, Logan. I promise." And with that, Amelia ran outside of that room. Covering her eyes, she ran. As she ran, lifeless bodies of soldiers, children, women, and the elderly were lying on the floor, bath in their own blood as well. Amelia continued to ran, until she collapsed in front of an altar.
Shockingly, the altar in the palace was not broken. Though there were a lot of broken glasses and furniture surrounding it, the altar was unharmed and clean.
She slowly removed her hands cupping her eyes, and once more, prayed.
"Lord, please take care of my brother. Please take care of also the innocent persons who died during this war. Also, please guide those who have survived the war. Though it seemed I am the only one that survived in this tragic war, I will still have faith in you. Faith that someday, everything will be back tomorrow, and the world will be at peace once more. Amen." And with that, she wiped away the tears from her eyes and stood up, trying not to look at the poor dead bodies.
She was about to go back to the room where she left Logan, when suddenly, there was a knock on the door.
Her eyes widen as she ran to it, opening it immediately.
"Please, help me." Said a bruised soldier. The soldier had a heavy accent when he spoke. He might be from the Germans. She thought. And there, she saw the symbol of Germany, sewed in his uniform.
"Oh dear, you are bleeding!" Though he is a German, Amelia immediately assisted the soldier and helped him walk to the infirmary.
When they arrived, Amelia let him lay in one of beds as she quickly took the first aid kit.
"Why are you helping me?" The soldier asked as she aided his wounds. Amelia smiled sweetly and said, "Because the Lord said, love your neighbor as you love yourself. And I am doing so." Amelia smiled once more and wrapped the soldier wound with a bandage. "There. That should stop the bleeding." Amelia stood up and returned back the things she used inside the first aid kit.
She silently put back the first aid kit inside the drawer when suddenly, a bright light surrounded the room. Amelia covered her eyes, when suddenly, an arm touched her shoulder.
"You have done well, my child." And darkness started to consume her.
Amelia slowly opened her eyes. A bright shade of pink was the first thing she saw when she opened her eyes.
Where am I? She slowly sat up and looked around. Amelia recognized that she was in her room. But how did she get there?
You have done well, my child. Those were the last words she heard before she fell asleep. But before that, a bright light flashed the whole room. Could it be? Then, there was a knock on the door.
"Amelia?" Her eyes widen. Amelia immediately stood up and opened her bedroom door. Tears started to fall once more, and she immediately hugged her brother.
"You came back." She silently cried as his brother returned the hug.
"I promised, didn't I?" He wiped her tears and kissed her forehead.
"Where is mother, and father?" They parted away from each other.
"They are in the chapel, along with the others that survived. Do you want to see them?" Amelia immediately nodded as they made their way to the palace chapel.
"Amelia." Amelia hugged his mother and father, and more tears started to fall from her eyes.
"Please, tell me everything will be alright again." The king and queen smiled at each other.
"Everything will be alright, Amelia. Peace will reign in the world once more." Amelia smiled and parted from her parents.
"Thank goodness." Amelia suddenly looked at the altar, where a painting of Jesus was displayed.
Thank you, my Lord. Thank you so much. She silently prayed her thanks and started to help the injured.
And from then on, the world was at peace once again. Amelia, kind-hearted and faithful, had offered her life to serve God, as she kept fulfilling her royal duties. From then on, she had become the most faithful princess the world has ever seen.
