HOOOOOO MA GAWD!!!!!!!!!!!The anticipation gurgled inside my stomach alongside a thousand butterflies that pounded against my abdomen, they sent ripples of excitement all through my body and lodged themselves in my throat, creating a lump of nervousness. The engine of the car growled impertinently in the otherwise silent car. You couldn't hear a squeak from anyone but it was as if their thoughts yelled as loud as any could imagine, my dad's doubt, my mom's sheer fear and my own bubbling excitability overshadowed by uncertainty.
Normally dad would drop me off to school, unlike Laurel who went by bus. But on this special occasion my mom just had to come, moral support if you'd want to call it that.
The silver crutches rattled in the moving vehicle creating a perfectly synchronized beat with the car engine. I joined the marvelous symphony as I formed the most melodies of tunes scratching the plasters rapped around my leg. That is until mom told me to stop.
The car pulled up into a deserted corner of the car park, the emotions threatened to burst out of my panic stricken body as I lost myself in a mist of doubt and worry. My breathing increased rapidly as my heart thumped against my chest once dad opened the car door. I stared down at the dirt that packed the driveway, unsure if I was ready, I looked up at dad whose hand was outstretched, ready to help me out of the car.
The four weeks of tedious rest and contemplating future events made me believe that I was ready to go to school again. But this was a whole other situation. This was reality. Thinking and doing are two completely different things. I wasn't just scared, I was terrified, the forthcoming of events was something that not even a whole month of thinking would leave me prepared for. I couldn't do this...not now...not ever...I-I-
"-Look it's my little mitochondria!" The familiar high-pitched voice shook me out of my thoughts as a bubbly blonde made her way to the car door. She took my backpack in her arms and greeted my parents.
"Hi Laurel and Emma, you both look great today!"
"High Mrs Winters!" They both chirped in unison, "oh and Mr Winters!"
"Hey Kais you're so fuc- f- full, yes full of sh- um...shock! You're so full of shock!" Said Laurel causing both my parents to raise an eyebrow at that cover up sentence. We all know what she wanted to say.
"Ummm...thank you?" I offered
She rolled her eyes, "well?"
I looked at her, "well what?"
"When are you gonna get off your as- as now seated rear?" Said Laurel, once again narrowly escaping a lecture from my parents on language
"I will, I'm just uh...processing"
"Processing? Kais you're not a computer," said Emma
"Yah I know that, I'm just thinking..." I said
"Well you've done enough thinking now get up you little piece of sh- trash!" She said parting along with my dad, laying my crutches in my sweaty palms.
I can do this.
Heaving all my weight onto my shaking legs, I took care to balance the pressure off my spine. With one final exhale and a passive shake of my head I thrust myself up, standing up steadily on both my legs, supported by two chunks of lean metal grasped by both my hands.
"See I told you that it wouldn't be that hard but no one wants to listen to the Mexican now do they?" Said Laurel perfectly depicting the eye roll emoji, it's like she was made for that emoticon or the emoticon was made for her. Either one was plausible.
