Chapter 20

I looked intently at my glass of vodka as I thought of that night. Hindi mawala sa isip ko ang nangyari, maging ang mga binitiwan kong salita.

It has been three nights after that.

The only time things had dawned upon me was when I came home to a dark place. He isn't here, I murmured to myself.

I recalled what I said and thought of some lame excuses. What if I just tell him that it was the alcohol talking? But who am I kidding? I was already sober when that happened.

"Hey, Maura, are you sure you're okay?" Scarlet snapped her fingers, bringing me back to present.

"Huh? Yea! Of course I am!" I tried to sound cheerfully.

"You seem off..." Audrey said.

"True. We're glad you've been hanging out with us for three nights but you always seem off," dagdag ni Scarlet.

"I'm fine, I'm just tired. You know... first day of work," ngisi kong sagot, hoping that they'd believe me.

"And what about the other nights? Aren't you glad to be with us?" may himig ng pagtatampo na saad ni Audrey. "You don't even get drunk and dance and you know, party!"

"Ano bang pinagsasabi mo, Audrey? I'm here, right? I'm here and I'm drinking!" giit ko sabay lagok sa isang shot ng vodka.

"That's like yiur first glass for tonight, Maura! We're on our fourth na!" sumbat nito pabalik sa akin.

I frowned. Did I space out that long? Sa tingin ko naman ay hindi.

"Is there something bothering you, Maura? You know you can always talk to us," ani Scarlet na may himig ng pagaalala.

Umiling ako at ngumisi.

"Told you, I'm just tired because of work," sagot ko sabay order ng tatlong shots ng vodka. Ininom ko iyon ng magkakasunod.

Today was my first day at work. Mabigat ang loob kong pumasok kanina sa trabaho. Since first day ay orientation halos ang nangyari. It was fine and easy but I felt tired. Siguro dahil wala ako sa mood.

And maybe because I was expecting something different. I was expecting sweet nothings before I go to my first day of work. Bahagyang may kumirot sa puso ko.

"Alam ninyo, tara na nga! Let's just dance!" anyaya ko sa kanilang dalawa na halatang ikinatuwa naman nilang dalawa.

We three danced together. Boys were all around us but I chose to dance with my girls.

It was almost 2 in the morning when I went home. Home... heh, right. Home pa rin ba ngayong ako na lang mag-isa ang tumitira. This will be the third night without him.

Or maybe not.

Medyo nanlaki ang mga mata ko nang nadatnan kong nakabukas ang ilaw. I made sure I turned the lights off when I left. Kung ganoon may ibang tao rito?

Naramdaman ko ang biglaang pagbilis ng tibok ng puso ko. Damn! Why am I feeling like this?!

"You're here," narinig ko ang pamilyar na boses na iyon. Damn that's the voice I've been wanting to here.

"Ah.. oo, lumabas kami nila Scarlet," halos namamaos kong sabi. "Ka... uhm, kanina ka pa andito?"

Tumango ito tapos ay kumuha ng tubig. Doon ko lamang napansin na nakatwalya lang ito at bagong ligo. I was waiting for him to say something ngunit nang napagtanto kong wala na siyang sasabihin, biglang bumigat ang pakiramdam ko.
