Chapter 11

Alyssa’s POV

Sure enough, as soon as James said that Aaron came through the door.

“I come bearing good news!  We found the man!”

“Really? Do you know who the man is?”

“No, not yet, but all in good time, all in good time.”  Aaron said.  He glanced out the door way before bringing his head back in. “In matter of fact, here he comes right now.”  Sure enough we heard a crazed voice shouting down the hallway.

“I won’t tell you anything! I swear on his mother’s grave that I will keep my mouth shut!  You won’t be able to get anything out of me, oh no, oh no.  The man who hired me paid good money, yes, good money for secrecy!  I will keep my mouth shut yes I will, yes I will.” That was all could hear before he was dragged farther down the hallway.  Well at least I couldn’t hear anymore yelling, but James and Chase probably could.

I glanced over at Chase and he and I shared a bewildered look.

“That’s the guy?” I asked in a disbelieving tone.

“Sadly yes, that’s the guy we have to work with.  It’s going to be hard to try and get anything out of him.  He just keeps screaming those same lines over and over again.” Replied Aaron.

“How can you be sure it’s him?”

“He’s carrying the same type of arrows as the one that was stuck in your leg, and we found him on the ground holding his bow to his chest in shooting range of where you were shot saying the exact same thing as he is now.” He said like it was obvious, while talking to me like I was a little kid.

I nodded, a little irritated at Aaron, but there was no arguing with logic. It was hard to believe that that was the man who shot me.  He seemed too… what’s the word... crazy? Psychotic? Could he even manage to hold a bow up and aim let alone try and kill someone?

“The king requests that your slave is there during the interrogation to see if the man recognizes him. Oh and the king has been looking for you.” He sneered directing the last part to James.  “Now let’s go, we don’t want to keep the king waiting.”  I did a mental eye roll, of course Aaron would act like it would be the worst thing ever if he kept my father waiting.

I watched as they walked out, and as they left Chase sent me a reassuring smile over his shoulder that made my heart skip a few beats, and I couldn’t help but to smile back giggling like a school girl.  I froze in mid-thought as a frown flitted across my face and wondered why in the world was I acting like this?  Where had that reaction even come from?

Chase’s POV

Aaron led us down a hallway, pass a bunch of doors, until we came to one I had never seen before.  I was down a lone hallway where it was the only door at the end of it.  There were two guards standing in front of it with spears.  Aaron nodded at them and they parted letting us through the doors.  We started walking down a dimly lit stairway with walls that felt damp to the touch.  We made it to the bottom and went down the hallway where there was a gathering of torches.  I instantly spotted the king from among the guards that were also there and sent him a glare.
