Chapter 23

Alyssa’s POV

The memories flashed before my eyes and it was as if I was there again, on the night that started it all. Which in my mind, I was.

A scream pierced the quiet night air. My eyes shot open and I huddled under my blankets. What was happening? Who screamed? I heard the clash of swords not far from my room and a crash of something breaking. I let out a whimper. My little sister, Evaline who was three, five years younger than me, was crying. My mother was screaming at someone to stop. The sound of fighting was right outside my door now, retreating farther and farther down the hallway. The sounds became muffled as they drifted away and soon everything was quiet.

I got up and tip-toed to the door. I opened it a crack and peeked out. Cost was clear. I opened it wider and slipped through and surveyed the hallway. There were drops of bright red blood that stuck out on the polished white floors that led from my parent’s room down the hallway. I crept over and stuck my head through the open doorway. The sheets were in disarray. The mirror had been knocked over and shattered, and Evaline’s doll lay on the floor. Evaline who always comes and sleeps in my parent’s room when she has nightmares was nowhere in sight. Nor were my parents.

Fearing the worst I rushed down the hallway, the clang of metal against metal becoming louder, and closer with each running step. I entered the ballroom, not knowing that what I was about to see would forever be with me in sickening detail.

I hid behind some curtains and peeked around scanning the scene before me. Father was fighting my uncle, this time not in a harmless sparring match, but a full-blown sword fight, little did I know I had arrived just in time to see the ending. Mother and Evaline, who was clutching mother’s skirts and crying, were surrounded by guards. The same guards who were sworn to protect us against enemies, even if the enemy was our own family, was letting my father get killed.

I ran towards father, not knowing what I was going to do, but knowing I had to do something. He was losing, he had a deep gash down his arm and stomach. Uncle Daniel had been hoping for a surprise attack while father and mother had been sleeping. He would have been able to kill him and gotten out, but father was a light sleeper and always kept his sword under the bed. I had always teased him about that, now it seems that was the only thing that had kept him alive.

They were all the way across the room and I tried running faster hoping I was going to make it in time, only I didn’t. Uncle Daniel had backed him up into a corner, mother was fighting the guards to get to him.

“Stop!” I screamed. Uncle Daniel didn’t even glance my way as he knocked father to his knees and stabbed him through his heart. He pulled his blade my father’s body and turned towards us grinning triumphantly. Mother was crying now and I realized I was too. I glared at the man that used to be my uncle, the man who had killed my father. Sobs wracked my body and he stalked over towards me. He grabbed me by my hair and I had to bite my lip not to cry out. He dragged me over and threw me in the embrace of my mother. She grabbed me hand and pulled me close. He walked up with a sick smile.

“How could you kill him? Your own brother!” mother cried. I was wondering the same thing.

“It wasn’t that hard. I’ve always hated him, ever since we were little kids, so that helped,” he replied smirking, “Plus I want the crown.”
