Chapter 16

Chase’s POV

There was a knock on Alyssa’s door.  I could hear it from where I was standing in the hallway.  I had been walking around the castle trying to pass time until Alyssa woke up.  I made my way over and saw James standing in front of her door.

“Hey,” I called down the hallway and jogged over to join James.

“Hey,” he said back to me once I was standing next to him.

“What do you need Alyssa for?” I asked him, but before he could answer she opened the door and looked at us with sleepy eyes.

“What do you need?” she asked us in a grumpy voice.  I stared pointedly at James for an answer.

“Master Daniel requests your presence in his office…” he said and looked down at her rumpled nightgown she was currently in. “As soon as you have gotten dressed, of course,” he quickly added.

She nodded, still only half awake.  “I’ll be out there in a sec,” she replied and shut the door.

“So what does the king need her for anyways?” I asked James.

He shrugged, “I don’t know.  He didn’t say, just told me to go get her and sent me on my way.”

I nodded, slightly irritated by this answer.   I really wanted to know why he wanted to talk to Alyssa.  He usually doesn’t without a reason, whether the reason is good or bad.  “What is it like working for him?” I questioned.

James frowned and uttered one word, “Brutal.”

Again I nodded in understanding. “I bet,” replied.

“Yah,” he said, “You got lucky getting Alyssa as your master.  I wasn’t so lucky.”

I decided not to comment, I really had nothing to say.  He was right though.  I did get lucky.  Before an awkward silence ensued, Alyssa’s door opened slightly and she slipped out, closing the door behind her.  She was wearing a plain red dress, and her hair still had the bed-head look.  It looked like she had been too tired to brush it.

“Let’s get this over with.” She said and marched purposefully down the hallway.  James and I had no choice but to follow.  There was no way I could leave Alyssa at the mercy of her father, no matter how much I didn’t want to be around him.

“By the way Alyssa, he is in one of his bad moods, so try not to provoke him.” James warned her.

Alyssa merely nodded, as if this was normal.  In my experience it isn’t, but that just might be me.  Of course people have told me that, but I have never heard someone tell that to someone like Alyssa.

When we made it to his office, Alyssa knocked on the door, three times to be exact.

“Come in,” we heard the king say after leaving us standing there for a moment.  Alyssa turned the knob and walked in.  I came in after her, with James holding up the rear.

Alyssa stood in front of his desk and James and I stood a couple steps behind her.  The king’s calculating eyes passed over us three as we lined up in front of his desk.  He rested his piercing green gaze onto James, “You may leave now.” He said.  James bowed, turned heel, and walked out the door, shutting it softly behind him.  Lucky, I thought.  The king was quiet for a moment and I took that as my chance to look around the room.  Even though I had been in here before, I never actually looked around.
