CHAPTER 23 - The Ash We Knew
THIRD PERSON
Serena watched as the Thunderbolt soared through the air. Everything around her slowed down, as if time itself had slowed down. The functionality in her body had ceased. She couldn't move anywhere, not even to dodge out of the way. She could only flick her eyes around. The boy standing across from her, with his lifelong partner, Pikachu, were both in the process of attacking her. But, that boy was not the same person she knew, and she was well aware of that. Her eyes then darted down, to her injured Pokemon. It hurt her inside, knowing her Pokemon suffered from injuries inflicted by a strong Pokemon that was not its normal self.
Everything still remained in slow motion to her, even after turning her attention to the people beside her. Both Diantha and Gary mouthed something inaudible to her, with Diantha's Gardevoir forming a ball of energy and Gary throwing out a PokeBall. She figured that Diantha commanded Gardevoir to intercept the attack, and Gary intended on sending out his Electivire to absorb the attack. But even so, she knew their attempts were one step too slow. The bolt of thunder with Serena in its trajectory surpassed their expectations in terms of speed. The attack was faster than any other attacks executed in the battle. Serena could only watch as the Thunderbolt charged through the air, and towards her.
"Gardevoir, quick! Deflect the Thunderbolt with Moonblast!"
"Serena! Get out of the way!" Gary yelled as he took out his Electivire's PokeBall and threw it straight at his friend. "Block it, Electivire!"
But it had been too late... For all three of them.
The electric type attack collided with the honey-blonde, sending shocks up to 100, 000 volts through her body. It felt as if she lost all sensation in her own body. It felt as if all sources of life had been taken away from her. She lingered there for a couple of seconds, standing weakly, then dropped to both knees and collapsed on the floor.
Gary and Diantha stood there, completely shocked. It took them a while, but after finally registering the series of events, Gary broke into a run towards the fallen Performer, with his Electivire standing guard. Diantha too, burst into a run, following behind Gary. As they were about to reach her, a twitch of movement came from her arm. Gary instantly noticed this and came to a halt, with Diantha following suit. That slight twitch then turned into a full movement of the arm.
"Serena? Are you okay?" Gary had a clear tone of shock and worry in his voice, after seeing that Serena hadn't given up yet. He was surprised that the girl still managed to keep ahold of consciousness, even though she had been shocked by the move known otherwise as 100,000 volts.
"Are you okay?" Gary asked again as Serena slowly lifted herself up from the ground with both arms. Her body was covered in masses of dirt and scratches, and her figure started to shake. But she still stood strong. Strong enough to keep fighting until the end.
"Still fighting are we?" Ash mocked from the other side of the room. He scoffed at her persistence and continued, "What are you going to do about your Pokemon? It's still do-" Ash stopped himself, realising Serena's Braixen rose herself from the ground, after lying motionless for an extended period of time. However, the Fox Pokemon seemed different from before. Her eyes glowed with a pinky-red colour and the flame on the twig she held grew twice as large.
"What?!" Ash scowled, angered by the fact that their opponents, who seemed to be defeated, still had the strength and will to fight back. It baffled him, beyond his current state of comprehension. "But how...?"
Even Gary couldn't answer his question. He was as surprised as Ash. One thing he could answer though, was the sudden change in Braixen's presence. "That must be Blaze that is activating."
