CHAPTER 17 - Determination
THIRD PERSON
In the forests near Geosenge Town, Diantha, Malva and Serena were battling with the swarm of Team Aqua grunts, alongside their Pokemon. Diantha had her Gardevoir, Malva had her Houndoom and Serena had her Braixen. The sun started to set, giving the forest a light orange radiance. The grunts had sent a relentless amount of attacks at the three, but to no prevail.
Serena was about to call another command to her Braixen, but a sudden tremor violently shook the earth, and it came from the other side of the forest, where Ash was battling against Matt. The magnitude level immediately threw Serena and the other off balance. After the performer recuperated, she cocked her head around and blankly stared at the mass of trees with a worried expression. The magnitude level either meant Ash's of Matt's Pokemon had taken a destructive blow.
"Serena! Watch out!" Diantha called out to the distracted honey-blonde girl. She instantly jerked her head back, completely losing focus of the current situation. Her Pokemon had been hit by a beaming ray of dark energy. Braixen cried in pain as it was thrown back a few metres.
"Braixen!" Serena yelled to her Pokemon. The Fox Pokemon weakly recovered to its feet, injured by the direct hit. She mentally slapped herself for getting distracted in such a situation.
"Stay focused!" Diantha advised.
"Sorry," Serena apologised, "Braixen, use Fire Blast!" The fire type clenched its wooden twig and spun it in a circular motion, generating a stream of flames. The branch then blasted a jet of fire which split into a star, engulfing a large number of Mightyena. The Mightyenas dropped to the ground with swirly eyes after enduring several burns. That was one of the last grunts to be taken down.
Suddenly, Serena heard a unusual ring tone coming from Malva's pocket. Both Diantha and Serena jerked their heads towards the Elite Four member, who covered the her pant pocket, trying to muffle the sound. Serena rose an eyebrow in curiosity of what the noise could've been. She also noticed a slight frown on the Kalos Champion's face.
"Malva. What's in your pocket?" Diantha asked suspiciously. She inched a step closer to Malva, forcing her to take a step back.
"Malva?" Diantha repeated. She didn't respond, but kept taking receding steps from Diantha, until she was backed against a tree.
"Why aren't you responding, Malva?"
That's when Serena noticed a smirk on Malva's face. "Houndoom, use Smog!" The Dark Pokemon shot a stream of toxic gas at both Serena and Diantha, forcing them to shield themselves from inhaling the gas. Before she knew it, Serena was engulfed by the cloud of gas, causing her to lose sight of her surroundings. She coughed and wheezed as she failed to block herself from inhaling the gas. It sent a burning sensation through her nose, her eyes started to water, her ears started ringing, and her skin paled even further than it already was. It felt like utter torture to her. All she wanted was for the intoxicated gas to blow over, but it showed no signs of disappearing any time soon. The stench of the gas made Serena drop to her knees, but still covering mouth and nose with her hands. That's when she heard a masculine voice from outside of the cloud of gas.
"Blastoise, use Rapid Spin!"
The unbearableness of the Smog slowly gradually lifted away as the gas dispersed into the air. Just to make sure it had fully disappeared, the honey-blonde waited a little while more, before reopening her eyes, only to see nothing but blurs. Her eyes were yet to be clear from water and her nostrils were still on fire. Her eyelids heavily stung. She had never felt this kind of pain before.
