BETRAYAL
I WAS WITH ALEC AND LYDIA IN THE INSTITUTE, STILL LOOKING AT THE UGLY FORSAKEN. I stood by Alec, biting my lower lip.
"I'm calling the nearest high Warlock to come to consult," Lydia said. I glanced down at the ugly beast. I cringed away from it. "Magnus Bane?" Alec asked.
"Yes, is there a problem?" Lydia asked, raising an eyebrow. "No, not at all." Alec replied. I pursed my lips into a thin line. "Do you guys know him well?"
"Uh, just a little." He said. "I actually can't wait to meet him," Lydia said, as she added a chuckle. Oh, this should be good.
"Did you know that my great ancestor Henry Branwell, who was the last of the Branwells to run an institute, and Magnus Bane invented the portal?" Lydia asked. She smiled. I frowned, glancing up at Alec. He crossed his arms over his chest.
"No. Just add that to the list of things I didn't know," Alec said. "Alec-" I started to say. "I'm sorry. You shouldn't have had to find out your parents were Ex- circle members." Lydia said.
"Not like that," Lydia says, frowning a little.
"You mean from you?" I asked, pursing my lips.
"Enough from you, Bella Fairchild." Lydia said.
I huffed, crossing my arms. "You know there's been a ban about talking about the circle until now." "Yeah, how convenient for my parents." Alec said. "This doesn't change how I feel about the lightwoods. Your family has always had a strong alliance with mine." Lydia explained.
"They've been a powerful source in the shadow world and praised for their decision." Lydia said.
"Devotion?" Alec repeated. "Hey guys, I'm just gonna go..." I said awkwardly. I began to walk away from Lydia and Alec without either one of them noticing.
-
That afternoon I needed to be somewhere else. I just needed to be out of that institute. So I went to go to my favourite pizza place down town. When I got back there wasn't very many people in the institute.
Probably with their families, or somewhere else.
Where is Clary? I tried calling her, texting her, I even left her a million messages but she still didn't seem to pick up. Frowning, I quickly ate the last piece of pizza then I headed to my room. Lydia's room is just a couple minutes down from my room. When I walked by I heard two people talking. "Lydia, do you have a minute?" Alec asked. Alec? Why the hell does Alec want to talk to Lydia? I pushed my back up against the wall and listened.
"Alec, I'm sorry about your parents, but my hands were tied," Lydia said. "Look, I...I know." Alec said.
"The law is hard, but it's the law. And I respect that."
I really shouldn't be eves dropping, but how can I help it?
"But I've realized that..."
"I have to listen to my heart." "Let's not forget where that got me," Lydia said, chuckling quietly. I pursed my lips, tucking a strand of hair behind my ear. "I know, and I can't bring John back."
"But, like you said, our families have been strong allies and we can use that to our advantage. Together, we can restore my families name and we can keep the institute."
"And we'd get to run it." Lydia said. I peeked my head through the door. My eyes widened when I saw Alec get down on one of his knees.
"Lydia Branwell. Will you marry me, Alec Lightwood?"
