Genna picked up her dress so she could run faster. The bottom of the white train was stained green from dragging across the grass. Charlie sprinted ahead of her stopping in a field under a big willow tree. He laid a picnic blanket down and set the champagne and glasses down on the blanket.. He pulled Genna down onto his lap. She looked beyond him though, past the woods where everyone was celebrating. Chelsea was her maid of honor so it was her job to keep everyone distracted as she and Charlie snuck off.
Genna thought back to ceremony. How Alvina, Lucy, Sage and Chelsea walked in front of her. Charlie stood waiting for her at the end of the aisle and the room was full of poppies. The gods and goddess sat at one side of the aisle and the mortal sat on the other. The endless vows and the hugging afterwards were torturous to her. The best part though was the reception. The goddesses went full out and decorated it to the extreme with a small manmade brook and stream flowing throughout the back yard of the house they were married in. The chairs were covered in veins and the ground was covered with mist so you couldn’t see where you were walking.
Genna tuned back into the present as Charlie lips brushed against hers. He whispered softly that he loved her every once in awhile, but other than that it was silence. They filled the champagne glasses and had a few glasses.
She a completely oblivious to her surroundings. Her hunter was lurching in the bushes. He carried only a single bow and arrow, so his aim had to be perfect. The success of him mission was vital to his survival and he was running out of time.
He pulled the arrow back and aimed for her. She was blissfully ignorant to the attack, which made him hesitant. The sight of her happiness was almost enough for him to jeopardize the mission, but then he fired. The arrow flew through the air hitting her directly in the heart, he never missed.
Charlie nearly had a heart attack himself as he felt the arrow buzz by his face, making his hair stand up for only a second. He didn’t want to look down, but he knew he had to. He wanted to the arrow to be planted in the ground, but he knew it wasn’t from Genna’s gasp. Her white dress was stained red from the mortal blood.
“No!” he could barely breath. “Genna!” he mouthed her name. He laid her in his arms cupping her pale cheek in his hands.
Charlie wanted to scream out for help, but he knew there was nothing he could do. Her time on Earth was up and he had to give her away. That day the gods took her from him. The tears fell freely from his eyes, but he did not sob. The pain inside him was too great for sound. He had to keep thinking that she was alive and immortal although she was not with him. He would miss her intense grey eyes, her loving smile, and logical and sometimes random comments.
He kissed her for the last time as a bright blue light engulfed her body. As it faded so did she leaving him empty.
A rustle from the bushes made his head snap up. Furiously, he went to investigate the bushes where the murdered was probably prowling. He saw the top of brown hair and lunged, ready to seek revenge, but by the time he got there he was gone. Wiping back tears and leaving a streak of bloody on his cheek, he peered down. Shining out of the shadows was a single golden feather.
