Kenyanna's POV:
"I think I want blue" I told my dentist as he pulled out the box with different colors for my braces.
"You sure?" He asked taking them out
"NO! I want pink" I was so nervous that I couldn't even think straight.
"I thought you wanted orange last night baby?" Mother asked me while typing on her phone.
"WHAT!? I DID? Okay it's orange then" I smiled nervously. My dentist and my mother laughed.
"Kenyanna, you have nothing to worry about. The process is painless and you're gonna be fine. The pain is not going to come until like 2 hours after you're done, but u can still take some medicine to avoid it" he explained.
"I guess" I rolled my eyes.
"Can you give us a minute?" Mother asked the dentist. He just nodded then walked off
"Mother I'm scared. You know I hate pain" I started to tear up
"Ken do you remember last year when that piece of glass got stuck in your leg and we had to rush you to the hospital?"
"yes. I was scared for my life" I laughed a little.
"You were screaming and cutting up. And I told you, you were going to be alright? And what happened?"
"All the doctor did was pour some stuff on my leg and it went numb and i couldn't feel anything." I laughed
"Exactly. You were alright, right?"
"Yea" I sighed
"Well let me tell you again. You thought you were going to die but look you're still here. This is a procedure that has been done millions of time. Think of it as a normal dentist appointment. Everything is going to be alright" mother said and kissed my forehead.
"Will you hold my hand for me?"
"Of course. You are such a baby"
"Technically I am! I'm only 11 years old" I reminded her.
"Right." She laughed and called the dentist back
"We're ready?" He asked smiling.
"Yes. And I'll take orange"
"Nice choice." The dentist started my procedure.
It wasn't as bad as I thought it would be. It was actually painless like he said. My mother was right again, I'm going to be alright. We drove around for a while but then my mouth started hurting so we had to go get my prescription and take me home.
Then pain was terrible. I was crying and freaking out. This part wasn't alright, wasn't alright at all. We finally got home and my mother jumped out the car and ran to the side with me. She got me out the car and ran me to the house.
"MOTHER ODELL HURT HIS ARM" Ethan screamed running in from the basement.
"WHAT?! Not right now Ethan! I gotta help your sister! She's in pain"
"And so is Odell! I think it's broken! He can't move it and he's crying. He never cries" he was right. Odell has hurt himself a million times but he never cried. I was crying more now because the pain was getting worse.
"Mother." I wined to her.
"MOTHER! I GOT A GAME THIS WEEK! THIS IS MY CATCHING ARM!" We heard Odell scream.
"Here Kenyanna. I'll be right back. Let me go see what's up with your brother okay?" She handed me my medicine then ran out
"But." Was all I could say. She left me there to go with Odell. It wasn't surprising tho. Odell came before me all the time. Everybody came before me.
"Dammit O!" She fussed. Then she came through the front room with O holding on to her and she ran right past me
"But mother." I said watching them about to leave.
"WHAT KENYANNA!?" She screamed at me and turned around angrily.
"Nothing." I said then threw my medicine down and ran upstairs.
"Ken." She said softly but I was gone.
"Worry about her later!" Odell said. Then she helped him to the car. I watched from my window as they pulled off. My mouth was still hurting so I just cried until she got back. I know I couldn't give myself my own medicine. I might over dose.
A couple of hours she came back. Odell sprang his arm but with a lot of therapy he would back on the field fast. I was still in my room under the sheets whimpering.
"Where's Ken?" She asked walking into Ethan's room.
"In her room. Tell her to SHUTUP too! She's been crying since you left. I'm tired of hearing her!"
Mother smacked her lips and came into my room.
"Got you some ice cream." She placed the spoon next to me. I just sniffed.
"You sure Odell doesn't need any too?" I rolled my eyes.
"Awww Ken. Don't do that. You know I love all of you equally. It's just that he was hurt and this game is very important to him this week. I didn't want him to be upset" she rubbed my back
"What about me? My mouth hurts. And when I called your name you fussed at me! I need attention too you know" I looked at her. She sighed.
"You ready to take your medicine?"
"Are you sure Odell's arm isn't hurting? Or Ethan doesn't need anything to eat? Or Cheryl doesn't need help studying? Or Lourie doesn't need any of her medication?" I asked salty
She sighed. "Ken I know you're mad right now. But your siblings feel the same way about you. They always say we treat you special, but in reality we treat you all the same. It's normal for siblings to be jealous of each other. Your dad and I are just two people" she explained.
"I know. I know. But sometimes you can't show equality. Sometimes you have to at least love one more than the other. We are all different." I said picking up my spoon. "Where's that ice cream"
She smiled. "That's my girl." She got my medicine and the ice cream and sat it on the bed. Once she gave it to me. We stayed up and ate ice cream while watching movies in my room. It was moments like these I cherished
