Chapter 35 - Meet The Harris'
Thanksgiving is just around the corner and I've been avoiding Carson.
Just until I can figure out my brain.
And avoiding is a hard thing to do when the other person knows you have no life.
He's been very set on introducing me to his family. He wants me to spend Thanksgiving with him at his parents' house, and that's terrifying to me.
We haven't been together for that long, is it really necessary to meet his family already?
"I have a cousin that speaks Asian." Melissa's voice breaking through, pulled me from my thoughts.
"What?" I turned my attention to the sounds coming from her phone.
Leaning into her, I looked at the screen. She was watching some foreign video on YouTube. There were Korean people playing some game and talking in their language.
"Asian isn't a language?" Where did this girl go to school?
"Yes it is."
"Um, not it isn't."
"Then explain to me what they're speaking?" She argued.
"Well they're Korean.... So probably Korean. Duh." I can't handle this stupidity.
"Okay Whitney, you always have to be right." She said in a matter of fact tone.
I looked at Levi who just silently watched what played out. He knew I was right, but he surely wouldn't speak up against his girlfriend.
But she gave him no choice when she asked him who is right.
Levi sat there awkwardly. He just kind of looked back and forth between us without making direct eye contact.
"Whitney." He mumbled.
"What was that?" I asked.
"Whitney." He spoke more clearly and Melissa gasped.
"You guys are dumb!" Her face turned red and she shot up from the couch.
Levi and I stared at each other, not knowing what to do as she huffed and puffed her way to her room.
You see, Melissa wouldn't usually act like this. Any other week, she'd just say "Go fuck yourself." when she's proven wrong, but this week was that week and Levi tried to bite his tongue the whole way through. Poor guy didn't know what he was in for with Melissa. She's by far, moodier than any other girl I've ever known. She was like a ticking time bomb until it stopped.
"So what are we doing for Thanksgiving?" I tried to lighten the mood, and find a reason to turn down Carson's offer.
"You mean what are Melissa and I doing?" He corrected.
"No?"
"Yes."
"No." I narrowed my eyes, realizing that Carson has already gotten to him. There was no winning now. No excuses could be made to get out of it.
"You need to go." Levi used his fatherly tone and I ignored him. "Whitney, it's only fair. He spends every day with us, the least you could do is get to know his family." I hated when he lectured me.. because more often than not, he was right.
"I'm nervous." I smoothed out my olive green dress, taking a deep breath.
"You don't need to be." Carson gripped my hand and turned the door knob.
