Éponine stood outside of the flat building long after Marius had left. Should she go in or should she spend the night on the streets like she had the past few nights. Finally after much contemplation she decided to find a place to sleep on the streets. She walked through the slums of Paris, maneuvering through streets and alleys with ease. She stopped at an alley next to a run-down apartment building and decided to rest there for the night. She sat down and looked to the sky. The stars were bright and cold. They were staring down at all the wretched souls on the Earth, silently mocking and judging them. She felt naked under their watch so she turned away from then and closed her eyes. Maybe tomorrow would be different.

Éponine woke to the sound of commotion. Her eyes snapped open and she saw the people of Paris already taking the day by storm. She stood up and set a course for Marius's house. She smiled, just the thought of being with him made her heart flutter. She pictured her and Marius walking through Paris, hand in hand. In her dream Marius loved her, he wanted her. Éponine pictured Marius leaning into kiss her under the star's supervision, but when their lips touched, nothing else mattered except her and Marius, together and happy. In her distracted state she did not notice that she had walked into the dirt road. Someone shouting "Hey! Look out!" pulled her from her illusion. She looked up to see a carriage coming straight at her. She couldn't move, the fear kept her from getting out of the way. The carriage kept getting closer, and closer, and closer until it was nearly on top of her. She closed her eyes ready for the blow, when instead of coming head on it came from the side. She tumbled to the ground with someone else. She opened her eyes and gasped. She couldn't believe who it was.

"Do you have a knack for trying to get yourself killed when I'm around?" He asked. It was Enjolras.

Éponine couldn't believe her eyes. She scrambled to come up with an answer, "Well, uh, I-I wasn't trying to get myself killed" she replied. She wanted to smack herself, that was the stupidest remark ever. Enjolras breathed harshly out of his nose, and got up, "well what were you trying to do?" He asked holding out his hand to her.

She hesitated before taking it, "I wasn't paying attention. I didn't realize it was coming, and when I did I tried to move , but I couldn't. Sorry to be a trouble, but thanks again", she said. She turned to leave but his hand grabbed hold of her arm.

"Éponine", he started, "would you like to come and have breakfast with me? I haven't eaten yet and saving a person this early in the morning can really take a lot out of you."

Éponine laughed; she hadn't eaten anything in about 2 days and she felt her stomach rumble at the mention of food. "Yeah, that would be great", she replied.

She followed him to a café on the corner of the street and sat down at a table in the corner. They sat in silence for a while before Enjolras took a deep breath and said, "So, what do you think you're going to get?"  Éponine looked down at the menu; she only recognized a few words on it. She tried hard to read the others but she couldn't.

Enjolras seemed to see her struggle and pushed the menu down, "Allow me", he said. He started to read off the menu items.

Éponine listened halfheartedly, she listened to the sound of his voice, deep and smooth, as it read each one of the menu items off. When he got to the end of the list he stopped and looked at her, waiting for a response. She quickly replied, "I think I'll have that" she said pointing to a random item on the menu.

Enjolras chucked and Éponine asked, "what's so funny?"

This made Enjolras let out a short and curt laugh, "you pointed to the heading" Éponine still was confused so Enjolras said, "you pointed to the word describing that group of food".

Éponine's eyes widened and she could feel her cheeks flare up in embarrassment. "Oh, well, I-" "you weren't paying attention when I read it were you?" He asked skeptically. Éponine sighed and looked down, "no I wasn't, sorry." She looked up at the clock and and saw that it was past the 3. She didn't know what time it was, but he usually met Marius in his apartment at the 2.  She was late! She hastily stood up and looked to a confused Enjolras, "sorry but I have to go, thanks for everything". She said quickly running from the table before he could even reply
