Grantaire's POV:
Grantaire sat in the café along with the rest of the Amis, waiting for Enjolras to arrive. It was unlike him to be late, but if he was, it was only a few minutes. The meeting was supposed to start an hour ago, he knew something was wrong. He took one last swig of wine before standing before the others. "Does anyone know what's wrong with Enjolras, because obviously something is", he asked. The boys looked around at each other, each looking clueless, except one.Marius's expression revealed he knew something. Grantaire took a few wobbly steps towards him and asked sternly, "Marius, what do you know?"
Marius's eyes flashed around the café and he took a deep breath before saying, "I'm not really sure of the whole story, but Cosette and Éponine were talking earlier in the café and apparently Éponine or Cosette said something that got him upset and he stormed out of the café. Éponine seemed really upset and Cosette tried to comfort her but she pulled away and slapped her, getting really angry at Cosette before running out of the café. That's all I know" he said nervously.
The boys in café started whispering to each other and R felt a hand on his shoulder. He turned and saw Combeferre with a concerned look on his face. "R, you and I both know something is really wrong. Go to his place, I’ll try to sort thing out here" he said.
R nodded and turned to leave the café. R followed the familiar streets of Paris and made his way to Enjolras's apartment building. He was about to open the door to the building when he saw something out of the corner of his eye. He turned around, but saw nothing. He rubbed his eyes and looked around again, still seeing nothing. He sighed; maybe he should lay off the alcohol, now he was seeing things. He opened the door to the building and walked up the stairs. He knocked on Enjolras's door and heard something crash against the door, it sounded like glass. "Enj, it's R, can I come in?" He called through the door. R didn't hear a response, so he tried to open the door, but found it locked. He sighed, "Enj unlock the door, let me in", still nothing. "Enj if you don't open this door I'm going to break it down. I’ll give you five seconds." He waited, "one", "two", "three", "four", "fi-" right in the middle of the word he heard a click. He turned the doorknob and the door swung open, revealing Enjolras's trashed apartment. "What the hell happened here?" He shouted as he stumbled into the apartment. All of Enjolras's furniture was knocked over and his possessions were scattered across the floor. R whirled around trying to find Enjolras and he saw him stumbling back to his bedroom. R followed him into the room and saw him collapse onto the bed. Wine bottles were scattered around the room and a gasp escaped R's lips. Enjolras had never drunk a sip of alcohol in his life. R stormed to the bed and flipped Enjolras off his stomach to see his tear-stained face.
Sudden sympathy filled him and he sat down on the foot of the bed. "Enj, what happened, please tell me".Enjolras shook his head and more tears streamed down his face.
R moved closer and wiped the tears from Enj's face, "please?" He asked gently.
Enjolras sighed, "Fine, I’ll tell you" he said, his voice slurring.
R scoffed and said, "Well may I be the first to say, that you look awful? What made you do this, mon ami?"
Enjolras cracked a small smile but it quickly slipped away. He whispered something that R couldn't hear, "what? Sorry I didn't hear that" he said to Enjolras. Enjolras met his gaze and said, "Éponine" loudly and his voice cracked, "I thought that I could drink to forget her, honestly R, it's not working for me".
R felt a gasp escape his lips, he had a guess that Éponine caused it, because of Marius's story, but he didn't want to jump to conclusions. "Enj don't worry about it, it's your first break-up I understand, but this is a little over the top. There are plenty of other-" he began before Enjolras cut him off.
"R, you don't get it!" Enjolras said sitting up and facing away from him, "I have loved for way longer than a few weeks. She wasn't just a random girl that I decided to try, like all you guys. I-I thought she was different" he sighed, his voice cracking slightly at the end.
R placed his hand on Enjolras's shoulder, "help me understand" he said gently.
He felt Enjolras's shoulders tense under his grip and then loosen. "Ok, I'll tell you". Enjolras turned back to face R, and began his story. "You know the story I told you guys a few weeks ago, about how I started the meetings and such?" R nodded, "ok, well the girl in the story is Éponine. I met her that night two years ago, and I have loved her from that moment on. To be honest for the past two years I didn't know if she was real, I thought I had just imagined her, but when I saw her that night the feelings inside me reawakened. I thought that if I told her I loved her she would love me." Enjolras scoffed, "boy was I wrong! She was in love with Marius, and she used me to try to get him. And that is why I am in this state, because I was blinded by love".
R was shocked, how could someone do this to Enjolras? Especially Éponine, she had everyone convinced, even him! R's expression hardened. She could not do that to his best friend. He was going to get answers. R stood up and began picking up the wine bottles scattered across the floor. "Enjolras, you need to get some rest. You have a revolution to plan tomorrow. Quit taking my job, and get back to doing yours" he said with a smile.
Enjolras nodded in reply and got into the bed. "I'll see you tomorrow R. Thanks for tonight".
R smiled, "no problem Enj!" He said as he left the room. R dropped the bottles on the table before leaving Enjolras's apartment, he had to find Éponine.
