Éponine cast one final look over her shoulder at Marius and Cosette before turning to find Enjolras. She ran to catch up to him and when she was close she called out, "Enjolras!” causing him to slow and look around.
When he saw her his eyes lit up and he waved. Éponine smiled to herself, this might be easier than she thought. She smiled and waved back to him. Soon she was walking in stride with him. He looked over to her and asked, "Why’d you leave so early this morning? I thought that you would at least be there when I got up before you said goodbye."
Éponine smiled at him, "I'm sorry I just wanted to-" she cut herself off, she couldn't tell Enjolras about her meeting with Marius that would lead to questions. So she continued by saying, "I just wanted to be out of your way, I didn't want to trouble you any more than I already had".
Enjolras shook his head, "You could never be a trouble Éponine, you're welcome at my house anytime".
She felt her heart warm, but she pushed the feeling down. She loved Marius, always has, always will. "Thank you Enjolras. So, what are you planning on doing today?" She asked him.
He stayed silent for a moment, thinking, "Well, I'm probably going to go to the café for basically the whole day. Nothing really interesting. And you, Mademoiselle, what are you planning on doing today?" He asked with a smirk on his face.
She laughed, but she added a little more volume to it, "Number 1: don't call me Mademoiselle unless I can call you Monsieur. Number 2: I don't have anything planned for today, so if you don't mind, can I tag along with you?" She asked batting her eyelashes slightly.
She saw a little color rise in Enjolras's cheeks and he smiled, "Of course you can!" He held his arm out to her and she took it without hesitation.
If she wanted this to work, she had to go all out. "Enjolras, I've always wanted to go to this new café down the street. Would you care to try it?" She asked.
Enjolras nodded, "sure, wherever you want to go is fine". However what he didn't know was that the café Éponine had in mind was the exact café Marius and Cosette went into earlier this morning.
They walked down the street until they reached Café. They entered and sat in the booth by the window. A few tables away Éponine could see Marius and Cosette smiling and holding hands. Éponine felt the bile rise in her throat and it took all her might not to go over to them and break them apart.
Enjolras sensing her discomfort turned around to see what she was looking at. Seeing it was Marius and Cosette he got slightly discouraged, "do you want to say hello to them?" He asked Éponine.
Her gaze snapped back to him and she smiled, "oh no I'm fine, thank you though".
Enjolras nodded and turned around again, "who is that girl Marius is with?" He asked her.
Éponine scoffed, everyone wanted to know Cosette, "She's some bourgeois girl Marius saw once and is in love with. Her name is Cosette. I knew her as a child. She was a servant in my parent's inn. Funny how things can change so drastically".
Enjolras turned to face her, "What do you mean?"
Éponine just realized what she had said, "Oh I shouldn't have said that, I'm sorry", she told Enjolras, but then she smiled slyly, "but if you must know, Cosette's mother couldn't afford to raise her so she left Cosette at my parent's inn. She went to work, but was soon fired and became a prostitute. My parents made Cosette work at the inn and do all the hard chores. Then one day, a random gentleman shows up at the door and tells us Cosette's mom died. So he paid my parents to take Cosette away. The irony is how much she had changed. She was a servant girl, now she's a pretend bourgeoisie".
Enjolras listened intently to Éponine telling her story and cast a look over his shoulder, "Wow, that's some story." Éponine looked over at Marius's table and saw that he was looking at Éponine and Enjolras, suddenly Éponine just started laughing. Trying to get Marius to wonder what they were talking about.
Enjolras looked confused but chuckled slightly at Éponine's laugh then whispered to her, "What's so funny?"
Éponine flashed a grin at him and said, "I just remembered a joke from a few nights ago, nothing important", she needed to change the subject so she picked up her menu and held it in front of her face, "so, what are you planning on having?"
Enjolras mimicked Éponine's action and read the menu over. "I think I'll have a croissant, what about you?"
Éponine put down the menu, "I'll have the same."
"Alright", said Enjolras, "I'll go place our orders" and with a smile he walked away.
She smiled until he was out if sight. She looked back over to Marius's table and saw Cosette glaring at her. Éponine cracked a smirk and glared back at Cosette. Did she know what she was doing with Enjolras? Then Éponine realized, in order to get Marius for herself, she had to take Cosette down first. So that's exactly what she was going to do.
