He watched them from behind the building. They couldn't see him but he could see them. The last time he had seen the girl was in the alley many years ago. The memory of her struggling beneath him pleased him, but now she was with a new man. A rich young man. She gripped his arm and smiled up at him occasionally. Who was this man? What had he done to charm the un-charmable girl? No doubt she liked him for his money; obviously she had convinced him to buy her a nice dress. After all, it was much better than anything her father could afford, well anyone of her class could afford. No matter though, soon she will be his once again, after all, he owned her.
Éponine gripped Enjolras's arm feeling surprisingly more comfortable in her new dress. Enjolras lead her back to the café, which was already almost filed with his student friends. They all shouted greetings when Enjolras enters, but when they saw Éponine on his arm, their jaws dropped. One let out a wolf whistle which was greeted with a glare from Enjolras. Éponine felt her cheeks flame up as she tucked her head into Enjolras's shoulder.
He squeezed her hand and said to the boys, "This is my friend Éponine". His comment was followed by a jumble of shouts from the boys all at the same time, "Friend? Don't you mean girlfriend?" "How'd you get her to even talk to you?" And so on. Éponine scanned the café and saw one of the boys coming towards them.
He had curly brown hair. He took her hand and pressed it to his lip, "Greetings Mademoiselle Éponine. I just have one question".
Éponine smiled, "Yes?"
A mischievous grin spread across his face, "Is Enjolras a good kisser?" The café erupted in laughter and the boy was pushed away by Enjolras with a smirk on his face, "That's enough, Couefeyrac". Courfeyrac held his hands up in mock surrender, but a shout was heard in the back of the café, "WELL IS HE! Don't leave me in suspense!"
With some slight sarcasm in her voice Éponine answered, "Oh yes, amazing" she said with a wink looking up to Enjolras. The café erupted into cheers, while Enjolras rolled his eyes and turned towards his usual table in the middle of the café.
Éponine and Enjolras sat down and Éponine looked around the café at all the boys. She turned back to Enjolras and asked, "What are their names, I know Courfeyrac but who are the others?" Pointing to each boy Enjolras listed off their names, "Combeferre, Grantaire, but everyone calls him R, Jehan, Joly, Bousset, Bahorel, and you already know Courfeyrac". Éponine nodded when the door burst open.
Marius rushed in with Cosette and Éponine couldn't help but roll her eyes. Of course she was overjoyed to see Marius, but did he have to bring Cosette?
"Sorry I'm late, Cosette and I lost track of time" Marius said to the boys.
"You have a girlfriend too?" Shouted Courfeyrac.
Marius smiled slightly confused, "Everyone this is Cosette. But I'm confused, who else has a girlfriend now?"
"Enjolras! Her name is Éponine!"
Marius searched the café for Éponine. She waved her hand and saw his eyes light up as he smiled at her. He took Cosette's hand and brought her over to the table with the other couple.
Enjolras stood up and kissed Éponine's head before saying, "I have to go start the meeting. I’ll see you at the end".
"Ok" Éponine said smiling.
Enjolras walked away and Marius and Cosette sat down. "Hey 'Ponine! You look great! Is that a new dress?" Maris asked.
Éponine stood and twirled around, "yes, do you like it?" She asked.
Marius nodded, "yeah it's nice. It looks great on you!"
Éponine sat back down and saw Cosette rolling her eyes. Éponine made her eyes look big and innocent before asking Cosette, "Do you like it? It would be nice to have another girl's perspective".
Cosette looked taken aback, but when Marius turned to her, her smile returned to her face and she said, "Oh it's just adorable, perfect for someone like you".
Éponine was shocked. Cosette had just made a deliberate stab at her, and Marius didn't even notice.
The girls continued to stare daggers at each other for the whole meeting. There was no way they would ever get along. And both of them knew this for a fact.
When the meeting was over Enjolras returned to the table and sat down next to Éponine. Éponine sunk back into her seat and grabbed Enjolras's hand.
Enjolras turned to her, concern in his eyes and judging by Éponine's look, he knew it must be time to go. He gathered his things and took her hand before standing up to leave. They said their goodbyes, Éponine smiling widely at Marius and waving goodbye before they left the café and went back to Enjolras apartment.
