Enjolras didn't know what came over him. Éponine just seemed so warm and inviting. She seemed to really like him; after all, she did grab his hand and put it up on the table for Marius and Cosette to see. So he just felt it was the right time to kiss her. He's wanted to do it since the bridge, is it really possible to love someone for that long? He pushed the thought aside and focused on Éponine's lips on his. At first she didn't do anything she just sat there, but after a moment her hands caressed his face and the kiss deepened. Enjolras pulled away, keeping his eyes closed, worried about what her reaction must be. He opened them slowly, and saw her deep brown staring back at him. He smiled sheepishly, "I'm sorry Éponine, I don't know what came over me".
Éponine held a blank stare for a moment more before forming a smile. Enjolras let out a huge sigh of relief. Éponine took his hand and squeezed it, silently reassuring him that it was ok, they were fine. So they sat in content silence as they ate, occasionally smiling at each other.
Once the pair was done they walked out if the café arm in arm. Judging from the looks the other people gave them, they were not accepted. Enjolras didn't care but he seemed to sense Éponine's comfort so instead of heading to the café; he turned around to go to a new destination.
Éponine looked up at him confused, "where are we going, Enjolras?"
He smiled down at Éponine, "You'll see".
She huffed and he laughed. Soon they reached the door to the dress shop on town. When Éponine realized where they were going she stopped and shook her head. "No Enjolras, please. Don't waste your money on me. My dress is fine".
Enjolras rolled his eyes and grasped her hand, "Éponine, your dress is barely being held together. It's the least I could do" he said kindly.
Éponine shook her head again and said under her breath, "You've done enough, I don't deserve it".
Enjolras lifted her chin, "Éponine, I will do everything I can to help you. And you do deserve it after all you've been through. You and I both know you've had some low points; you need some high and happy points to accent the bad moments. You need happy memories". She looked up at Enjolras and smiled and he felt his heart flutter. She was beautiful, despite her bruised face, and bony frame. So with that, he took her arm and led her into the shop.
When they entered it seemed like everyone stopped what they were doing to stare at the bourgeois boy and the street rat with him. Éponine cowered behind Enjolras's arm, while Enjolras stared threateningly into the store. A young woman was pushed to the desk and asked what they wanted. "I would like a nice, simple dress for my friend to wear, considering how bad of shape hers is in. The women looked at Éponine, "Right, ok, right this way Mademoiselle"; she said emphasizing the last word as a way to mock Éponine. Enjolras stared her down and he saw her shrink under his stare. He nodded to Éponine to follow her and felt her slowly let go to walk to the woman. Éponine cast one last smile back before she disappeared behind a curtain. Enjolras sat down on one of the benches in the front of the store to wait for Éponine. The store was not the nicest. It had racks of fabrics and dresses lining the walls and most of the store, however off the sides were curtains creating rooms for the women to get measured and try their dresses on.
He didn't know how else to occupy himself so he settled on counting the people going by outside the shop window. He saw Joly, R, and Courfeyrac making their way over to the café. Enjolras wondered what they would think when he arrived there after them with Éponine. Their mouths would drop and their eyes would grow wide. Enjolras cracked a smile at the sight. However, he also saw a figure that looked very suspicious. It was a man about his age with a tattered top hat on sauntering through the street, taking money out of unsuspecting passerby's pockets. Enjolras was about to go out to stop him, but he heard a woman clear her through behind him. When he turned around he saw Éponine. She was wearing a nice new navy blue gown. It was a simple design, but it was perfect for her. It fit her well, and it covered much more than her other dress did. Enjolras asked Éponine to sit down while he went to go pay. When he gave the woman the money she said to him, "You do know she is sickly skinny and covered in bruises, right?" Enjolras looked at the woman, "Excuse me?" The woman sighed, "I said, she is sickly skinny and her whole body is covered in bruises. You know that, right?" Enjolras nodded slowly and turned to face Éponine. She smiled to him and he walked to her and held out his arm. "Shall we?" He asked. She stood and took his arm, "We shall". And with that they were on their way to the café.
