When R left Enjolras's apartment he didn't know the first place to start looking for Éponine. He walked through the streets looking down random alleys. He usually just saw scrawny cats and kids huddled in the corners of the alleys, and he was beginning to lose motivation. He was about to give up when he heard faint sound of sobbing. He quickened his pace until he found the alley where the sobs were coming from. He looked in and saw a girl in the corner. She had he back pressed up against the wall and her arms wrapped around her knees. Her head was resting on her knees and R could visibly see her body shaking from her sobs. He was about to continue looking, but it registered in him, that was Éponine! He turned into the alley. He hadn't expected to find her like this. She had used Enjolras; she never truly loved him, why was she all torn up? He felt no sympathy nor compassion towards her, so he took large, wobbly bounds towards her.
She heard him and he saw her lift her head slowly off her knees, wiping her eyes. "Please Monsieur, I'd like to be left alone" she said with a quiet shaky voice.
R didn't know what provoked him to do what he did next. He yanked Éponine up off the ground and slammed her into the alley wall, "Why'd you do it?” he screamed at her, "What the hell were you thinking?"
Éponine stood stunned and shocked until she realized it was one of Enjolras's friends from the meetings. Tears began pouring down her face again, "I'm sorry, I-", R slammed her shoulders into the wall again; "No you're not sorry. You used him when you knew he loved you! Who the hell would do that? You're twisted and he deserves so much better than you" he yelled at her, pushing her back down to the ground.
She gathered her skirt around her feet and stared blankly at the ground. She mumbled something that R couldn't understand, "what did you say?" He said picking her back up again. Éponine continued to stare at the floor, "I said you're right" she replied weakly.
R felt the ferocious expression melt of his face, replaced by a confused look, "What?" He said loosening his grip on Éponine.
Éponine's deep brown eyes shot up to his, "You're right, ok? I'm despicable I know that! Why do you think I was sobbing? I hurt Enjolras and it pains me so much. You're right, I did use him. But only at first, when I thought I loved Marius. One night, I finally realized that Marius was not worth my time and I had someone who loved me for me. All my feelings for Marius disappeared, and my feelings for Enjolras became apparent, and-".
R took a few steps back from her, "Wait, you love him?"
She nodded feebly.
R let out an exasperated sigh and ran his fingers through his hair, "well why don't you just tell him that? He's a mess! He's probably drunk his first alcoholic beverage in his life, and he drank more than I do in a night! And that's saying something. Éponine, you changed something in him, and now with you gone, he has no motivation to do anything. He's lost. You need to tell him!"
Éponine sighed, "I tried to tell him! He wouldn't listen to me. He's too stubborn and proud; he wouldn't listen to me when I tried to tell him the truth".
R nodded, but then asked, "How did he find out?"
Éponine turned away from him, "Well, I was, uh, talking to someone I grew up with as a child and I guess you could say I treated her badly", R was about to interject, but Éponine cut him off, "it's a long story. Anyway she knew Enjolras was there in the room, and she somehow figured out that I was using Enjolras in the beginning and she said it. I didn't know he was there, but the way he said my name, I could tell he had been there the whole time. I tried so hard to fix it, but he just wouldn't listen to me!" She cried and she dropped to the ground, holding her knees.
R stepped over to her and lifted her gently to her feet. He enveloped her and hug, which at first she resisted, but she then sunk her head into his chest and cried. A few minutes later, R pulled Éponine away, "Ép, you need to tell him. Today, right now. Go to his apartment and talk to him" he advised.
She nodded and looked up at him, "Will you come? I don't think I can do this alone".
R smiled sadly, "I don't think I can come, I think this is something you guys need to figure out for yourselves."
Once again Éponine nodded, "ok thanks" she said as she began to walk out of the alley. She turned back right at the end and looked at him with a smile, "R" she called back, "you know for a drunk, you're an extremely loyal friend".
R laughed, "thank you Mademoiselle, I try to be".
Éponine waved to him once more before leaving R alone.
He smiled to himself, satisfied with his work, and made his way back to the café.
NEW POV:
He saw her leave the alley with a small smile on her face. She was alone. Where was the boy? He sighed, it didn't matter, Éponine would lead him to the boy. He followed her cautiously through the shadows as she approached the apartment building. A sly smile appeared on his face, and he turned on his heel to go find the others. It was time.
