Éponine thought a lot about what she was going to say when she reached Enjolras's apartment. Would he even let her into the house? Would he let her explain? She shook the doubt from her mind and she entered the building. She climbed the stairs swiftly and silently and made her way to Enjolras's door. She took a deep breath before going to knock. She hesitated, placing her knuckles quietly against the door. She closed her eyes, she couldn't do it. She began to turn away, but something stopped her. She pressed her ear against the door and she heard what sounded like muffled sobs. Her eyes watered and she pounded her fist against the door. The sobs subsided, and were followed by crashing until a hand was on the door.
"Who is it?" She heard Enjolras ask, his voice still weak from crying.
She took a deep breath, "Enjolras it's Éponine. I-I just wanted to talk to you. Will you let me in?" She said as calmly as she could. She heard him gasp on the other side of the door.
"Éponine?" He said in shock, but that was quickly followed by a gruff questioning, "what the hell are you doing here? Why should I open the door for you?"
Éponine leaned her head against the door, "Because I have to tell you the story, the whole story. Not just the bad, but the good. Please Enj, just give me a chance", she said shakily.
She was met with silence on the other side. She sighed, he wasn't letting her in. She began to back away, and headed back to the stairs when she heard a door creaking open behind her. She whirled around and saw Enjolras's head peeking out of the doorframe. R was right, he looked awful. He blonde curls were a jumbled mess on the top of his head, and his eyes were bloodshot with large purple bags surrounding them. He jerked his head to her before disappearing back into the apartment. She quickly followed him on to find his apartment completely trashed. She felt the guilt consume her again.
Enjolras closed the door behind her, before turning to face her. He clapped his hands together, "So, why in the world have you shown up at my apartment after you used me to get another man?" He asked trying to sound clam, but Éponine could hear his voice quivering.
Éponine thought of so many things to say, but decided to just cut straight to the point, "Enjolras, R told me to come here tonight-" Enjolras scoffed and turned away from her, but she grabbed his hand tightly. At her touch Enjolras tried to pull his hand gently out of her grip, but she held it firmly, "don't walk away from me! You need to listen!"
Enjolras pulled his hand out and whirled to her, "I need to listen? What more is there to say? You used me end of story".
Éponine felt anguish and fury building up inside her, "No, not end of story! You only know one side, the first part! You're too afraid to hear the second part because you are afraid of what I will say, what really happened! You need to just listen to me for 5 minutes and let me explain what you heard in the café".
He sighed and his brows knitted together. He was thinking. Finally he nodded and lead Éponine to the couch, which was the only piece of furniture in the room that was still upright.
Éponine took a deep breath before beginning her story, "Enjolras, when I formally met you, I was blindly in love with Marius. I thought that I might actually have a chance with him, if I got him to like me. Little did I know that he would only ever see me as a friend. I followed him wherever he went, and when he saw Cosette, I knew I stood no chance on my own. So I took matters into my own hands. I knew that you had feelings for me when I approached you the night after you found me in the alley, so I decided that I would use you to make Marius jealous". She saw Enjolras's fists curl into balls on his knees, so she continued quickly, "at first I thought it was an ok plan, until I started feeling guilty. I realized one day, the night before I told you about my past, that Marius would never love me, or see me as anything more than a friend, so I turned to you. I discovered that I had hidden feelings for you that were suppressed and drowned out all those months for my love of Marius. When I told you everything, it was because I was done feeding you lies, I love you and I wanted you to make your own decision about me, the real me. The one, who lies, steals, cheats, and is abused. It wasn't just a sob story, it was true, and I love you Enjolras with all my heart and soul, and if you would have me, I want to be with you", she finished. She held her breath and waited for his reaction.
He would not look at her, but she could see him thinking. His eyes were narrowed in concentration and he pinched his mouth together. Without warning he faced her and grabbed her face. He stared into her eyes for a split-second before crashing his lips onto hers.
Éponine could feel the joy build up inside her as she placed her hands on his face. His hands slowly dropped down her body to her waist and he pulled her closer to him. Finally Enjolras pulled away from her, but kept his forehead pressed against hers, "I love you, Éponine" he whispered to her.
She smiled and whispered back, "I love you too, Enjolras". They smiled at each other before they started to lean in for another kiss. However right as their lips were about to touch someone pounded on the door. "Open up" he called, "I know you're in there Ép. Open the door and your pretty boyfriend won't get hurt". Éponine's blood ran cold and a short gasp escaped her lips. He was out, and he had found her.
