Éponine watched Enjolras climb the wall and peak over, Marius by his side. Every fiber of her body urged her to go up on his other side, but she resisted and watched from the shadows cast by the café.
She heard the National Guard captain call into the barricade, "Who's there?" All eyes looked to Enjolras and she could see the smallest bit of fear and doubt in his eyes, but he called back strongly, "Revolution". Barely before the words escaped his mouth a storm if bullets rained down upon the barricade.
Splinters were flying, people were yelling, screaming for help. Blood was squirting everywhere and Éponine saw Joly frantically running around trying to attend to all the injured.
Éponine took one final look at Enjolras, who was fighting a guard, before turning her attention to the nearest wounded person. She looked down and saw the side of his shirt drenched with blood. From the looks of him, a bullet had skimmed his side. She ran to grab gauze from the café before returning to the man on the ground. She wrapped his side tightly and managed to stop the bleeding. She smiled, proud of her work before she finally met the gaze of her patient.
It was a young man she had never seen before, but he looked like a gamin. He nodded gratefully at her before attempting to sit up. He winced in pain and Éponine reached down to help him up. She supported him into the café and sat him down among the other injured.
She turned out of the café in an attempt to find another person she could help, but her eyes drifted to the barricade. The shots and screams were persistent and did not stop. She scanned the wall and her eyes landed on Enjolras. He was sitting behind a carriage wheel, shooting out into the National Guard's ranks. Suddenly
Éponine heard a huge thud behind her, Marius was grabbing a bucket of gunpowder and a torch, he was going towards the barricade. Éponine raced after him as he rapidly climbed the barricade.
Suddenly she heard Gavroche shout out to Marius, "Watch out Marius! What are you doing?" Éponine's eyes shot upwards and saw Marius preoccupied with the gunpowder, however a National Guard member was preparing to shoot him. Éponine thought of Cosette, alone and abused in her younger years, she needed someone to love her and care for her, and that person was Marius. Éponine had to act quickly.
She scrambled up the barricade and finally reached the National Guard member. She grabbed his gun as he cocked it and began to redirection it, but she was too slow.
Blinding pain erupted all over her body as she was shot. She felt her legs give out and she fell down the barricade, the wood splintering her as she went. She finally crashed to the ground and the wind was knocked out of her lungs. Her back arched and she began heaving breaths. She tried to sit up but the pain only flared up more. She couldn't move and her senses stopped working. Her hearing and vision faded in and out as the chaos continued around her. She could feel the blood, her blood, ooze out onto her clothes. It felt like it was pouring, soaking her quickly.
Suddenly the gunshots stopped and in her blurred vision she was able to see that the boys had stopped running around like maniacs and finally took in the scene around them. "Holy shit" she heard someone say as she felt someone touching her. Her vision faded back in and she could see that it was Joly.
He was staring at her with wide eyes, "You're a girl?" He asked in disbelief.
Éponine reached a feeble arm up to her head to find her hat missing. He must have not recognized her because of the amount of dirt and blood on her face, and she was thankful. She tried to reply but instead only a gasp of pain escaped.
At that sound Joly jumped into action. He ripped off Éponine's jacket and examined her body. He mumbled quietly to himself as she heard many call his name. They needed him elsewhere with other injured revolutionaries. He sighed loudly and called out to someone.
Éponine's vision faded out as Joly walked away and she was joined by someone new. This new person put his arms under her knees and the small Of her back. He lifted her up and carried her into the café. She felt herself getting placed down on a table and a small gasp was detected by her ears. She forced her eyes to open and to see clearly and saw Enjolras staring down at her with an expression of rage, concern, and fear. He knew.
