She raced to Marius's apartment and slowed right outside his door. She readjusted her dress and caught her breath. She opened the door to find Marius in the corner of his room. "Hey there Monsieur Marius!" She said as she walked into the room.
Marius looked up and smiled, causing Éponine's smile to grow. "Hey 'Ponine! I was wondering when you were going to get here! I was getting worried?"
She smiled at the use of her pet name and was about to reply but decided not to tell him about her run in with Enjolras so she simply stated, "I just got caught up in the town this morning. So what is the plan for today Monsieur?"
Marius stood up and made his way to her. He grabbed her shoulders and bent down so he was at eye level, "Éponine how many times do I have to tell you to call me Marius?"
Éponine laughed, "At least once more Monsieur". Marius laughed and walked out the door. Éponine scrambled to follow him and they walked out of the building.
They were barely 2 steps out of the building when Marius stopped abruptly. Éponine turned to look at him and saw that he was staring past her with his jaw dropped. She followed his gaze and saw he was staring at a blonde girl on the other side of the road. She was with what looked like her father giving money to some of the poor. She looked up and scanned the crowd, her gaze holding when she saw Marius.
Without even saying anything Marius abandoned Éponine and walked across the road. He walked up to the girl and they stared at each other for a few minutes before they said anything. Finally Marius held out his hand and introduced himself. Within seconds the two were in a full blown conversation, laughing and smiling with each other. Éponine felt her heart drop. Marius liked this girl, not her and there was no way he would ever feel that way towards her. The girl’s dad noticed his daughter talking with Marius and called her away. The girl said goodbye to him and with one last wistful look she walked away, leaving Marius by himself. Marius walked back to Éponine with a huge smile on his face. "Did you see her 'Ponine? She was beautiful! And she even had a beautiful name, Cosette." Marius smiled and continued babbling on and on about her. Éponine felt her eyes stinging and her throat tightening, but she kept the smile plastered on her face to not worry Marius.
Marius continued talking about the rich girl when the smile slipped from his face and he stopped waking. He looked at Éponine with sad eyes, "'Ponine I'm a fool! I don't even know where she lives! How will I ever find her again?" Marius looked heartbroken. She couldn't just let him feel this way.
She sighed and turned to him, fake smile back on her face, "Maybe I can find her. I do know the streets pretty well. Maybe I could just look around and see if I can find her."
The smile returned to Marius's face, "Oh 'Ponine you would do that for me? How can I ever thank you?"
Éponine had a million things she wanted to say, love me, kiss me, forget about her and choose me, but she kept those thoughts hidden inside her and instead answered, "No thanks needed Monsieur, I don't need anything". Marius pulled Éponine into a hug and thanked her. Éponine held onto him for as long as she could, enjoy every second of the contact.
Marius pulled away and looked at her, "I'm going to the café now, if you find her come there and tell me right away, okay?" Éponine put the smile on one last time, "Of course, Maris." And with that they both went their separate ways. Marius to the café and Éponine going to find the love of her love’s life.
