Emilina's POV:

*Monday, January 12, 2014, 6:36 a.m.*

I had to stay overnight in the hospital because of my knee. The person who runs their x-rays and CAT scans had already left for the night by the time we got here last night.

They were going to take me in for the x-rays and a CAT scan at nine but my parents already had to leave for work.

I was awake, but I was pretending to be asleep, listening to the conversation between my parents, Dana, and the doctor.

"There is a possibility that Emilina is going to be needing surgery," the doctor said.

"That's what we were told last time but then they said she was all good to go," my dad reminded them.

"I know, Mr. Callino, but we did also warn you that, if it gets worse, we may need to act with surgery."

"My daughter is not going to go into surgery without us here!" my mom began to raise her voice.

"Don't worry, today we'll just be getting x-rays and CAT scans along with running a few tests. It's not even guaranteed that she'll need surgery, but if she does it won't be until tomorrow that we'll operate.

"Mrs. Callino," Dana spoke. "I understand that you're worried, but I promise you that I won't leave her. You two need to get to work and you need someone here to protect and comfort her. I was there before and I'm here now. I promise you, Lina will always be safe with me. Who better to stay with her than her best friend? Besides the two of you, of course."

"Dana, I appreciate it, but I don't think you understand how serious the situation is," my mom said and I wanted to yell at her. Of course he understands. He's the one who got me here and he's the one who's been taking care of me the whole time they've been gone. It's not his fault that they're never home. Dana's the only one who's constantly been with me throughout all the years of being alone. If I wanted anyone with me, it would be him.

"I completely understand the situation!" Dana protested. "Mrs. Callino, how do you think she got here? I brought her. Why do you think she called you? I made her. Why do you think she didn't get raped? I got there in time. Look, I know that you don't particularly like the idea of your daughter having a boyfriend, no mother does, but that's not what this is about right now. Right now it's about Lina. I know her and I care about her more than anything in this world besides my own family. I promise you that I will not let any harm come to her ever again and I will always be there when she needs me and when she's in trouble."

The room was silent for a bit and I was anxious for my parents' answer.

"Fine," my mom spoke. "I'm trusting you, Dana. But I swear if anything happens to her..."

"Don't worry, I won't let him touch a single hair on her body."

Before my parents left for work, they both kissed my forehead and I heard my dad whisper to Dana, "Thank you. Next time you see that little prick, do whatever you have to to keep my daughter safe."

"I always do," I heard Dana respond.

After a few seconds, I heard the doctor say, "When she wakes up, please let her know what's going on as to the x-rays, CAT scan, and tests."

"I will."

I heard the door close and then Dana said, "Okay, Lina. They're gone. You can open your eyes now."

I did as I was told and asked, "How did you know I was awake?"

"Please," he chuckled. "I've known you long enough to know when you're faking."
