Mattie looks different today. We sit together in the park, and he just sits there while I stare at him intently.
"Okay, I give up. What's going on?"
"It's nothing..."
"Oh, come on. I can see there's something going on."
"Well... it was gonna be a surprise..."
"Yeah?"
"I got in to Northwestern!"
"Oh my god! Mattie, that's amazing!"
"Yeah, I'm going to Illinois next weekend to meet my roommates. They seem really cool, one even works as a dj at a club near the dorms..."
He kept talking, but I wasn't listening. I just couldn't shake one word he said. Illinois. That's so far away from New York. And it's almost the end if the school year. We only have now. And I want it to last forever. But I won't.
"... And then we're coming back."
"Mmhm."
"Ey, Sydney, are you good?"
"Yeah, yeah. I'm just... happy for you."
I smiled and hugged him. But my mind was still elsewhere.
