The two had finally made it through the day. It had been difficult, but night finally settled over, and Asylum and Sari were ready to relax and rest up.Spreading from the crowd of people, they snuck into the woods, finding a good place to set up camp. Nearby was a small river, with thick forest surrounding them.
While Asylum started the fire, Sari caught his attention with a shy whisper.
"Um... I-I'll be right back... I'm gonna wash up by the river..."
Asylum nodded, "Okay, don't wonder off too far..."
The orc- Er, The woman gave him a small smile as she nodded her head, before wondering off into the woods, disappearing into the trees.
He sat down, poking at the fire with a stick nervously.
A pain of fear grew in his stomach as he waited for her to return. He didn't like being separated from her ever since they had found each other after all this time. He cared for her deeply...
A couple of minutes passed, Asylum was contemplating if he should go looking for her. He knew that she could fight for herself, but he still worried.
But thankfully, the faint rustling of bushes and her stepping out from the woods made him relax, letting out a soft sigh.
She avoided eye contact as she walked up to him, "Hey, how's the fire coming along?"
Asylum wasn't paying attention, suddenly mesmerized as she sat down beside him by the fire.
She looked absolutely breathtaking. Her new appearance was definitely something he couldn't complain about.
"Asylum?" Sari waved a hand in his face, snapping him out of it as he focused on what she was saying.
He went flustered as he nervously chuckled, "O-Oh, Sorry..."
His sudden fixation was targeted at something else... Something his eyes spotted on Sari's hand.
A scar.
Not just one. There were many, trailing from her hand all the way down her arm.
They looked like burn scars that had been placed there recently. It looked painful.
"You keep zoning out." Sari giggled, her smile slowly turning into frown when she noticed Asylum wasn't responding.
She looked as he stared at her blankly, finding his eyes upon her hand, which reviled her scars...
She sheepishly crossed her arms against her stomach, "U-Um, so, a-are you tired?"
Asylum sighed, looking up at her with wide golden eyes. Gosh, how she missed them...
"Sari, what happened..?"
"What do you mean?" She played dumb, giving him a fake smile. She looked down at the ground.
Asylum wasn't taking it.
Carefully, he grabbed her hands, looking her in the eyes, "Sari... Tell me, how did you get those?"
She flinched at his touch, but slowly relaxed as she tried to control her breathing. Tears pooled in her eyes, and she quickly shut them to avoid crying. She couldn't cry, not in front of him.
He could feel the pain as he kept a gentle grip on her hands.
He wanted to take all of the pain away. He wanted to rewrite all of those years he had been gone without her.
After a quiet moment of listening to nothing but the forest sounds, Sari slowly opened her eyes, her glance still locked in the ground.
She quietly spoke, "Those things... That light up and are supposed to heal you... There was an accident... it turned me into what I am now... And gave me these..."
She mumbled the last part quietly, gesturing to the scars.
There was a second of silence before Asylum spoke up, speaking quietly.
"Can I see them..? Please..?"
She was rather ashamed of them... She thought they made her weak and foolish. But she trusted Asylum with her life.
Slowly, she nodded her head, trying to relax as he slowly began to lift up her shirt sleeve.
All along her arm, littered with scars.
"I-Is there more?"
Sari blushed faintly, but decided to just get it over with.
Lifting her shirt up, she sat there, reviling the scars all along her body. Asylum was a bit flustered from her suddenly lifting her shirt, but he continued to examine her other scars.
"I know..." Sari chipped in, "Their hideous..."
"No." Asylum replied. "There is not one thing that is hideous about you..."
Her face grew warm. She had never heard that from anyone before, she wasn't sure how to feel.
Asylum carefully trailed his fingers along her arm, along her scars.
"Do they hurt..?" He softly asked, reviving a gentle shrug.
"Sometimes..."
He let out a sigh, "I'm so sorry..."
She stayed silent, avoiding his stare.
Letting his hands tail along her arm, he took her hand in his, catching her attention.
Her eyes widened when he brought his lips on a small scar on her hand, causing her face to flush pink. He moved along her arm, gentle butterfly kisses along her scared skin.
"A-Asylum..?" She whispered, tears in her eyes, unsure exactly on what she was feeling. Care? Affection? Love?
"It's okay to cry..."
She broke down, letting out all of the pain and emotion that she had been holding back all this time. Clinging to Asylum, she cried into his hair, sobs wrecking her body.
Asylum held her close, feeling all of her pain with her.
