Prologue

Tris

The steady beat of my heart surprises me. It's been what seems like forever since I've felt anything. My senses have been dulled, stopped to the point where death is a step away. Too many times I had considered taking that step, but I've been weak and selfish by staying in this before-death state.

I feel panicked. This sudden outburst of feeling has me worried. Am I finally leaving this world? Will I join my parents? Do I want to?

To be honest, I don't.

All too soon I start to regain feeling in my toes. The fire of life burns through my legs and up my stomach. Then my fingertips, arms, shoulders. I can feel every bone, nerve and fibre of my existence and I realise I am ready. Ready to join the world. Ready to be brave, smart and selfless. Ready to be Divergent.

My senses take the longest to wake up. Every step is excruciatingly slow.

I yearn for touch, smell, hearing, taste and mostly sight.

Seconds seem like eternities but before I know it, my ears pick up the sound of beeps, my nose picks up the smell of antiseptic and my mouth tastes of dryness.

My fingertips brush a paper-like cloth and I realise I am lying on a bed.

The last step to consciousness is opening my eyes. My eyelids feel magnified, heavy beyond belief. But I need to do this. I have to.

I raise my eyelids.
