Chapter 12
Tris
I blinked at her, unsure if I’d heard her correctly.
David, the one who just threatened me, is counting on me? It made no sense.
“Okay, so let’s go through our plans for you.” Katherine continued, “We have multiple serums to test on you Tris, they are: the Aqua Serum, the Nourishment Serum, the Recovery Serum, a more advanced Memory Serum and more powerful Truth and Simulation serums. The course should take up to around 6 to 8 weeks; a week for each serum and more time if we need to correct anything.”
I nodded my head to show I understood. Some of the serums sounded slightly foreboding, but I was confident in myself.
“Uh, and then after you have finished you can become a full time assistant or just have this as a one-time sort of thing. That’s up to you.” Lucas added.
I nodded once again.
“Well then, if everything’s sorted we would like to try a basic Simulation Serum on you, Tris, just to see how you react under the serum.”
It’s been a while since I’ve been in a Simulation. What if something comes up and I can’t handle it?
Taking a deep breath I slid into the seat.
Katherine leaves the room, briskly as Lucas starts to wipe my neck with the antibacterial wipe.
He pulls the needle out and places it at my neck. The cold liquid washes through my veins and I wince at the slight stinging sensation.
“Lucas! Wait, how did you know I’d said yes to the job?”
“Oh, David passed me on my way here and told me you said yes.”
Before I could reply, the simulation took me under.

I stood in a white room, blinking from the sudden, harsh light.
The white walls were covered with a layer of glass.
“Hello?” I called out into the empty room, unsure of what was happening.
A metallic, robot-like voice pierced through the silence like a knife, “We found out what you did.”
The sentence rang out through the barren room.
I span round trying to find the home of the voice. But after doing a whole 360 of the room, nothing could be found.
The voice rang out again, but this time something different was said. “You thought you could hide from us, couldn’t you?”
The voice spat the words like they were venom. I span around once again trying to figure out where the voices were coming from.
The first sentence was repeated again. Then not shortly after, the second one. They kept repeating until they were overlapping each other. My heart was pounding.
More voices joined in with the first ones. Multiple, accusing sentences were filling the void of silence in the room. My throat closed and I couldn’t breathe. The voices were suffocating me; closing in on me.
I staggered to my knees heaving for air that I couldn’t find.
The voices kept increasing; never silencing. My knees came up to my chest as I wrapped my arms around them. Silent tears streamed down my face. The voices swarmed every part of me. They had found me. I couldn’t hide what I had done.
I smashed my hands to my ears; trying to block the noise. It worked partially as I tried to steady my breathing, until a single voice rose from the deafening hum of the other voices.
It was David’s.
“I know everything you did.”
The single sentence struck a chord in me and uncontrollable shivers raked through my body. I couldn’t see, I couldn’t think.
He knew. And he was going to kill me.
I was gasping for breath when I suddenly remembered where I was. It was all just a simulation. I regained my thought back as I thought about how to stop the simulation. I calmed my heart rate, but it wasn’t enough. I started gasping again, I was surrounded. I was going to be consumed and annihilated by the voices.
Unable to take any more, my mouth fell open and released a shrill scream.
The white glass walls shattered and shredded the voices to dust. Glass rained down on me. Everything was in slow motion as I looked up and saw wispy outlines of screaming faces.
Then everything went black.

My eyes shot open.
My throat felt like sandpaper as I gulped for air in the stuffy room.
The door opened too loudly and it hurt my ears. Lucas and Katherine and other scientific people crowded around the chair I sat in, some writing notes frantically, others were just staring open-mouthed at me.
“Tris, that was much more than we expected, you were in there for 2 minutes! We couldn’t be happier.”
I stared up at Katherine, my breaths shaking and my head nodding a little too fast.
I tried to block the annoying hum of the numerous voices, but it was incredibly difficult. My eardrums felt sore and numb; everything was too loud.
My thoughts were clouded but one lone thought sliced through the clutter; David was trying to uncover my past. He was trying to discover my biggest secret. The reason I died those 2 years ago.
He wanted it and he wasn’t going to get it without a flight.
{A/N: Picture of Katherine to the side. And I think I’ve found a song for this book. I was listening to it while writing this chapter and I think it suited the story quite well. The song is Human by Christina Perri, its such a good song! Well that’s all from me, please talk to me guys! I’ll happily have a conversation with anyone, so inbox me!
