It's a story of girl saves boy. Boy is nerd. Girl is flattered by his awkwardness. They go on date. Fall in love. Get married. Sounds like a classic right? No? Good. I didn't think so. Because nothing is ever that simple. Not in Gravity Falls and mo...
"Have a Merry Christmas Lillyin!" called Wendy as she left on Christmas Eve.
I had already finished all of my Christmas shopping only to remember that Mabel also celebrates Hanukah. I had made her a cute little paper dreidel for the first day. On the second day I gave her some new knitting needles. But tonight I wasn't about to give her anything... at least, not for Hanukah. Tonight was the Pines family Christmas Party and Mason had invited me. I had all the gifts for the family in the saddle bags of my bike. They weren't big gifts but some were slightly expensive.
Mason walked in the room and hid something behind his back. "Lillyin! I thought you'd left already."
"Nope." I looked at him as he moved the thing around behind his back. "I'm going to assume that's my gift and you didn't get it wrapped yet. I'm I right?"
"Yes." Mason looked at his feet. "But that's because it just finally got here." He shifted his weight from foot to foot.
"Well you wrap that while I go get some things from my bike." I stood up and pulled on my coat. I went out into the snow where Wendy was having some trouble starting her truck. I walked over to her. "Need some help?"
"Lillyin. Yeah if you could help me that'd be great." She leaned over the hood of her truck.
I looked at the motor. "Did you put any antifreeze in this thing?"
"My brother was supposed to do that for me..." She took the cap off. "And so he didn't do it."
"I'll give you a ride home if you want." I offered her a helmet.
She sighed and took it.
I started the bike and she climbed on behind me. It wasn't the first time she'd ridden with me so I didn't have to worry too much about that. She hung on loosely as I took her home. When we got to her house I didn't even turn off the bike.
"Thanks for the ride!" she said over the roar of my engine.
"No problem! Wait!" I reached back into the passenger side saddle bag. I pulled out a smallish red box and tossed it to her. "Open it."
She took the lid off and smiled at the pair of fake diamond earrings. Even I can't afford real diamonds. "Thank you, Lillyin."
"Merry Christmas." I backed my bike out of her driveway and went back to the Mystery Shack. I shut off the bike and grabbed all the gifts for the Pines family and Soos. Still wearing my helmet I went back inside and put the gifts under the Christmas tree they'd set up in the living room. I took off my helmet as Mrs. Pines came into the room.
"Oh my!" She looked me over. "That's not what you're wearing is it?!"
I looked down at my outfit. It was just some jeans, my bike boots, and my work shirt. "Um... I don't have anything else here..."
"Nonsense! Come with me." She grabbed my wrist and started to pull me towards the attic. I followed close behind her remembering the last time I'd been on these stairs I had been replacing them. She pulled me into the room that had previously been Mason and Mabel's. She stopped in front of a bed. "Sit." I sat. She opened one of the suitcases she brought with her. "I ended up bringing three bags because I couldn't decide what to bring." She opened another and started searching through it. "Here it is." She pulled out a dress. It was green with a red trim and a black belt. There was gloves and boots to go with it. There was this shawl looking thing that sat over the shoulders. "Try this on." She handed me the things.
They were almost heavy for clothes. Wool, probably. I stood up and Mrs. Pines stepped outside the door so I could change. I changed quickly wondering if she'd noticed the scars on my wrist while she was holding it. The dress was almost too short, falling just above my knees, the gloves reached my elbows and the boots felt like slippers. I stood in front of the mirror and pulled on the shawl. There was a giant red bow sitting on my chest. I sighed and opened the door. "I hate dresses."
Mrs. Pines smiled. "It's the legs isn't it. I used to hate dresses because of the leg thing too. My legs would rub together really bad so I asked my mom what to do about it and she gave me these..." She reached into the suitcase again and pulled out what looked like pant legs with no butt or waist to them. "I don't remember what they're called but I know they helped. Just pull them on like socks but take the top all the way to your underwear line." She handed them to me.
I was skeptical but I sat down and pulled them on like she said to. They were skin tight and felt like leggings. I smiled at Mrs. Pines. "Thank you."

"Consider it your Christmas gift." She smiled.
"Mrs. Pines you don't have to give this to me!" I looked quickly at my wallet in my jeans beside me and back to her. "I have the money to buy it at the store."
"No." Mrs. Pines crossed her arms. "It doesn't fit me anymore anyways. You keep it as your Christmas gift. I want you to have this dress. I was looking for someone to give it too. Plus it means I get to keep the cheesy bracelet I was going to give you."
I smiled at Mrs. Pines. "Yes, mam." I took another look in the mirror. The legging things didn't quite match but they were close enough for me. My eye patch was coming loose in the back and had started to move. "Um... Mrs. Pines... would you mind helping me with this?" I adjusted it to the proper spot and held it here.
She looked at me slightly confused at first but then she realized what I meant. "Oh... yes, dear." She walked up behind me and untied the bow in the back. She retied it but I could barely feel it.
"A little tighter please." I didn't take my hand away from the patch for fear it would fall. People seeing a hole in my face didn't tend to make anyone happy.
"Yes." She tied it tighter and stepped back.
I turned and looked at her.
She was smiling widely. She quickly wiped at her eye and turned back to the suit cases behind her and zipped them. "You look beautiful."
I sighed. I wished people would stop doing that. I knew that before I asked for her help she'd forgotten about the eye patch. Everyone did. Then when they'd look at me again they'd get sorta sad because I had this problem, this hole in my head. People would feel sorry for me and tell me I was still pretty and then often they would wipe away a tear. My mom had done it every time I'd come home from school for the first month and my sisters still did it sometimes. "Mrs. Pines. I already know I'm beautiful. Trust me. I hear it every day. Don't be put off by my handicap. I'm fine."
Mrs. Pines turned and blinked away another tear. Then she pulled me into a sudden hug. "That's not what I meant. I mean you truly are beautiful inside and out."
I wasn't sure what to say. Mason had said his mom would judge me, and it seemed she'd judged me as good, but this was a little extreme. Maybe I should tell her... no. It needs to be Mason who I tell first... I let her hold me close for a while before I felt too awkward from the human contact. I cleared my throat. "I think we should get going, Mrs. Pines."
"R-right." She released me.
