The Stalker

Chapter 31

Val and Peta were waiting beside Sharna’s bed the rest of the day.

Around 2 pm Val felt Sharna’s hand twitch in his hand. She was moving her fingers inside his hand. Peta felt the same thing from the hand she was holding and they looked at each other.

“Did you also feel that?”
“Yes, I felt that. Her hand just moved.”
“Sharna, babe can you hear me?” Peta said.
There was no response, Sharna was still unconscious, but the movement of her fingers gave them hope she would wake up soon. Peta also pressed the button for calling the nurse. She came a couple of minutes later.

“Is there something wrong?”
“She just moved her fingers, on both sides.”
“I will inform the doctor.”

The nurse left the room again and she called for the doctor. He came about an hour later and meanwhile Sharna had been twitching with her fingers a couple more times.

“I’m really sorry I couldn’t come earlier, we had an emergency. So, can you tell me what happened?”
“Sharna started moving her fingers, they have been twitching for a couple of times now. We talked to her, but she hasn’t woken up yet.”
“That is really good news. In most patients we find that the first thing they do is twitching with their fingers. It can take some time before she really wakes up, but we know it is going the right way. Let the nurse call me again if she wakes up or if there is something else. I will come back in about 1 to 2 hours to check on her again. Can you also inform me when her parents have arrived? I would like to talk to them as well and maybe answer some questions. I see you again.”

90 minutes later the doctor visited again, but nothing had changed. Sharna was still asleep and the doctor didn’t want to wake her.
“If she is still sleeping, there is a reason for this and if she sleeps, it is probably for a reason. If there is anything, please let the nurse call me.”

Val and Peta didn’t let go of Sharna’s hand for the next thirty minutes, but Peta had to go to the bathroom and Val was left alone with Sharna for a couple of minutes. He felt her twitch again.
“Hey beauty. Can you wake up for me? I know you’re there and I would love to see your smile again and hear your voice.”
He kissed her on her forehead.

This time the twitching didn’t stop. Sharna was moving her arm and she started moving her face.
“Sharna?!”
Sharna started breathing a little heavier, like she was in pain.

“Sharna, please wake up. I know you’re almost back, please come back to me.”

Peta came back from the bathroom and saw the way Val was talking to Sharna. She then saw the way Sharna was moving in her bed. Peta walked towards the bed.
“Hey Shar, wake up babe, please.”

Sharna moved her hands towards her face, there was something on her face and she wanted to take it off. Her entire body was hurting, but especially her head, her ribs and her thighs. She heard to people talking to her. One voice belonged to a man, the other to a woman, but she couldn’t hear what they were saying, nor who was speaking. Part of her wanted to open her eyes, but she also wanted to keep sleeping. One of the two put her hands back down and she couldn’t take the mask of her face. At first she wanted to push those hands away, but the hands felt familiar.

Sharna recognized Val’s hands. He must be one of the two people talking to her. The other person was probably Peta, she knew that girl would never leave her side.

With that in mind, Sharna tried to open her eyes. She had to see her friends and she had to know is she was really saved. She tried to open them, but her eyelids were heavy.
