The Girl With One Leg

Chapter 5

I wanted to scream and cry but I just stood there staring at them. Ryan stopped next to me and looked down at me...extremely confused. "what's up?" he asked quietly.

"my so called friends are hanging with the girl who has bullied me for 7 years" I said as my voice was cracking slightly.

"what bitches...just walk past them with me like they never mattered to you" he said and I nodded in reply. I began to walk past them but Rebecca stuck her foot out, catching my crutch and making me fall flat on my face. Which by the way really hurt. Ryan lifted me back up and I stabilized myself. They were all sniggering and laughing. I turned to them and just smiled.

"if that's the best you can do its pathetic and girls...I really thought highly of you all but once again you just prove to me that I never should have trusted you...but people make mistakes. Enjoy life on the other side girlies" I said sweetly making their jaws drop. Ryan just smirked as we walked past them and into our first lesson. My mum had luckily rung the school and moved all of mine and Ryan's lessons so we were together as I still couldn't walk very well. We had maths first...which I despised. Maths was one of the only things I couldn't do. On the board in big red letters was Pythagoras' theorem. Who is this Pythagoras? And why did he have to mess around with triangles. I took my seat at the back of the class and Ryan was a row in front of me. The bell went and people started filling in. A blonde girl came and sat next to me. She noticed my leg and smiled at me. I got my book out from my bag and began doing the questions on the board. A few minutes later I felt a tap on my shoulder I looked up to see the girl next to me smiling.

"um...sorry to bother you but I think what you said to Rebecca early was really brave and mature of you...and you should be proud of how strong you are as a person" she said making a full smile break out on my face.

"thanks...that means a lot. What's your name?" I asked turning my chair slightly.

"oh its Sophie...you are Amber?" she asked and I nodded. "well I don't have many friends so can I hang out with you?" she asked.

"of course" I said in unison with Ryan who had turned around and was listening to my conversation as well as the boy sat next to him. Sophie smiled at both the boys.

"oi nosey, who's your friend?" I asked pointing to the blue haired boy who was making goofy faces at Sophie making her giggle.

"this is Brent...oi Smurfy say hello" Ryan said hitting Brent on the back of the head making him wince and me and Sophie laugh. 

"hello the names Brent...nice to meet you" he said shaking mine and Sophie's hands.

We spent the rest of the lesson talking and laughing and for once I wasn't worried about what people were thinking about me.

But as always my happiness was short lived when Rebecca came storming in with egg dripping down her hair. She scanned the room and when her eyes saw mine I knew I was in trouble. "you!" she screeched as she came over. "look what you did to me" she screamed.

I just laughed at her and crossed my arms. "sorry to disappoint you but I never did that but who ever did is an absolute legend" I said as everyone began laughing...what she did next was unexpected...she ran out crying. In all the years, I had known Rebecca I had never stood up to her like I had and I have never seen her cry. I didn't really know where all this confidence was coming from but I loved it.

"who do you think did that?" Sophie asked still in fits of laughter.

"oh we know who did it" Ryan said and as if by magic a pair of twins walked in smirking and came and sat by Ryan and Brent. I recognised them but I didn't know their names. "you two meet Mason and Mia". They both stopped laughing for a second.

"its nice to meet you both...sorry for getting you in trouble Amber we just saw what she did to you earlier and we cant stand bullies Mason said. I smiled at his response.

"oh its no problem thanks by the way...for doing that to her" I said laughing slightly.

"its no problem...we welcome you both to our friendship group" Mia said and we all high-fived like we were part of some superhero team.

It was lunch and I was walking to the benches outside with Mia and Sophie since it was so hot outside. The boys were sat under a tree eating pizza. We walked over and I trailed slowly behind the girls. The girls sat with the boys and then we all realised something...how the hell was I supposed to get down there. Ryan noticed my confusion...of course he did...he always did.

Its because he likes youuuuu! My self-conscience was screaming at me.

'no he doesn't' I said in my head.

Yes he does you just can't see it...and you like him too it shouted back. I shook my head ignoring it. He can't like me...just forget about it I said to myself.

"do you need a hand getting down" he asked quietly looking at me with those cute blue eyes...

"uh yes please" I giggled quietly. He put his arms under mine and lifted me up bridal style making me blush profusely. He gently placed me down on the soft grass next to him and he put his arm around my shoulder. Mia raised an eye brow at me and I gave her a death glare making her laugh.

After a few minutes, Mason looked at me like he needed something..."hey Amber can I ask you something without you getting offended by it...I won't put it in a mean way" he asked nervously.

"please go ahead" I said taking a sip of my lemonade.

What's it like...like is it hard to live with one leg?" he asked nervously. I felt happy that he asked me that question...I can talk to people that will hopefully understand.

"its odd. Sometimes I feel a tingly sensation...like it's still there and then I remember its not. I feel like a burden on people because they have to help me all the time" I said looking over at Ryan "you would think it would be easy to learn to deal with it...but its not. I struggle to get up in the morning with just one leg to push myself up but it will get easier and as soon as I get my prosthetic leg on I can be normal again". They all just nodded and smiled apart from Ryan who took my hand and just held it sweetly in between us.

I hope Ruby and dad are looking down on me right now and are proud of how I'm getting on and I hope they know that I miss them. I looked down at mine and Ryan's intertwined hands and looked into his eyes.

"is i...it ok if I do this?" he asked with a cheeky grin on his face. I just awkwardly blushed and nodded. I'm beginning to think they I'll be alright. I'm a fighter what can I say?
