Renewal

As we walked out of the church, Bryan offered to sit by me at the funeral. It was at the same place as we already were, and we had about an hour.

"Do you want to go out to Five Guys?" I asked.

"No, I'm a vegetarian." He said quietly.

"Oh right! You're the brother who refused to eat turkey at Thanksgiving."

He nodded sheepishly and I felt a little bad about bringing it up.

"It's okay. My sister is too. Let's just walk slowly to the reception." I offered.

"Okay." We walked for about 20 minutes, aimlessly, around the church. Once we passed a garden for the 5th time I stooped walking.

"You don't talk much." I observed.

"Yeah, I know." He said as he started to walk again.

"That's it?'Yeah, I know?', Bryan. What's wrong?"

He turned around and I saw that his eyes were red and his cheeks were streamed with tears. "We're about to go to my brother's funeral. A funeral! And all you want to do is make small talk with me? Sasha, he's my younger brother and he's been a part of my life ever since he was born. You didn't know him like I did! You don't know what I'm feeling. And it's not like you even loved him. You turned down his proposal..." He rubbed his forehead and tried to stop his face from reddening even further. "You, are the reason he died! If you had just agreed to marry him, you wouldn't have run away, and he wouldn't have been killed! You killed him Sasha! It's all your fault!" He was fuming, and his every word made my eyes sting even more.

I wiped my eyes and stepped up to face him. "This. Is. Not. My Fault! I loved Owen so much, and if I could do over any screwed up decision I made in life, I would go back and save him."

He stepped even closer to me and looked at me with such hatred and fury. "Well, it's not like I can get a renewal in the brother department. No... But all you have to do is slap on some makeup and go looking for a new boyfriend."

And with that, I spun on my heels and started running in the other direction.

He cackled and started to yell at me. "You can't keep running from your problems Sasha! They'll catch up with you before you know it."
