I stood behind the counter of the surf shop, waiting for customers to start filling the small room when the high tides would begin to roll in like they usually did. Every day was peaceful and calm this summer, something I had been enjoying more and more.
Today was like any other day was, warm and comfortable, especially with the salty ocean breeze. I would stand here for who knows how long, waiting for the special girl to drop by.
I had noticed her routine after the first three days of her continuously showing up when summer started and I was sure she would do it till summer ended.
I didn't know her name because she never stayed for long. She would come in, offer a warm but shy smile and get whatever she needed, buying it silently. Before I could ever ask her name, she would already be gone and out the door.
She was absolutely stunning. I don't think I had ever seen someone as beautiful as she was. She had dark long hair which she had a habit of running a hand through, sweet pink lips that made me want to push her against the counter and kiss, a stunning body that had the most luscious of curves, and striking green eyes that melted my heart with just one look.
For some reason, everybody seemed to naturally move away from her whenever she came in the shop and I didn't know why. My family had moved here rather recently and I had a feeling, this tiny little town liked to keep secrets.
Sitting on my stool, I waited, deciding today would be the day that I would talk to her. There was so much I wanted to know about her just for the sake of learning. She was intriguing and I liked that, in fact, I loved it.
When she came strolling in, my heart nearly jumped out of my chest. My mouth opened, my brain trying to get me to speak but I couldn't.
She had a bikini top on, Cuba's flag stretched across it with an abstract lace back with dark blue jean shorts. Her hair was down like usual, her hand going up and running through it to sweep it back like always.
I felt my lips upturn into a smile as she leaned down and grabbed a strawberry kiwi iced tea from the fridge just like she had for the entire month of June. Waiting patiently, I froze when she stood back up, her eyes landing on mine.
As I smiled nervously, her cheeks flared up and she smiled back shyly. Gosh, she was so cute. She turned away, facing the rack of shirts that my dad had imprinted the shop logo on. With her cheeks still red, she grabbed a dark blue one before walking up to the counter, setting the two items down.
"Is that all for you today ma'am?" The employee side of my brain kicked in as she nodded. "That will be six dollars please," I told her as she pulled some money out of her pocket, setting it down next to the stuff.
Silently, I put the money in the register, taking the receipt and putting it in a free beach bag with her drink and shirt.
"Thanks," she spoke, smiling kindly as I nodded, watching as she turned around, starting to leave.
"Uh, hey. Wait," I found the courage to speak, blushing deeply as she turned around. "What's your name?"
"Lauren," she answered, chuckling softly before leaving the shop.
I smiled, playing with the end of my tank top as she walked on the beach, getting closer to the ocean. She set the bag down next to her board, slipping her shorts off.
She scraped the bottom of her surfboard, looking up every once in awhile to check on the waves. Eventually, she put down the block and stood up, holding her surfboard by her side. I bit my lip, watching as she ran into the water. She surfed for awhile, almost colliding with another surfer in one run that made me catch my breath.
