Normani
"To the dearest of my heart,
Your skin is as fair as the moon at the brink of the disappearing evening paints of orange and red, and your hair is as dark as the night that encompasses it.
Your eyes tell a thousand stories from love and hatred through the green oceans that swirl within them. They are a window that may open with the passing tick of a clock, only allowing the holder of your heart to look through.
And your lips are your weapon, but such a beautiful weapon they are. They are quick to deliver thoughts of the mind, but also words of the heart and may hold a person captive within your kiss.
Your mind is just as beautiful although, filled with love and compassion that may change the world. You are smart and witty to which I admire.
Your heart is kind and made out of a gold that has no value but is above all others because of the love that spurts from every vein and flows through your body.
You are of a nature that has no place on this world because you are perfect.
You are an astonishment."
I stood in front of the class, squeezing the paper so tightly in my hands that it felt like I was going to fall over from the lack of balance. Our assignment had been to share a piece of writing in our Language Arts class and I had forgotten. So that left me to find something that was very old.
Normally, I would be fine with this but there was an issue.
Lauren was in this class.
I tried to write something at the last minute but I couldn't and because of that, I was stuck reading this. My lungs were struggling to suck in air as I felt the stares of the class that sat before me, the teacher finally realizing I was done.
"That was okay Normani. Thank you. You received a grade of 57%."
"Bullshit! Give her a higher grade!" Someone yelled and I cringed at the accent I knew all too well. Lauren was sitting in the back, her eyes locked on me as I shuddered. Quickly, I took my seat.
"Miss Jauregui, don't make me count you down for that," the teacher spoke and Lauren rolled her eyes, standing up.
Oh god Lauren. Whatever you're about to do, please don't, I thought to myself as she glared at him.
"Look Señor asshole, she deserves a better grade. That was good and I'm sure it's better than everyone else's," Lauren projected.
"No. If you want to grade idiots all day then be my guest Miss Jauregui. Get a degree and go teach, but for now you are here and so are all of you. You're adults and you will take whatever grade you get. None of you have any power over that."
"No but the dean does."
"Excuse me?" The whole class was staring at Lauren, curious about what she was going to say. She obviously had something to use against him.
"Let's just say I know about you Mr. Submissive, and I know what you like to do with his wife. You love to be put down by a woman. You're probably even enjoying this right now."
The teacher's face turned a dark red as the class burst out laughing. "You wanna call us idiots and be mean to us? I don't give a shit Señor Hollis but I'm not gonna let you grade students down for no good reason," Lauren defended us, her words clear and strong towards the American man.
He just looked at Lauren before nodding towards me. "Normani, why don't you read your piece again?" He requested and I felt sick to my gut, knowing what he was figuring out.
"You don't have to do that Normani," Lauren said behind me as I looked up at her.
"Oh no. But I must. I want to give her a fair grade Miss Jauregui. I need to hear it again." I could practically see the gears turning in his head, clicking into place as I slowly went back to the front of the class.
I felt as if I were going to cry, my eyes finding their way to Lauren. I could tell she knew she had fucked up. Now, he was going to expose whatever he could.
Quietly, I read the writing again and there were actual tears filling my eyes as I continuously tried to wipe them away. "Hmm, interesting. Fair skin, dark hair, green eyes, and a sharp tongue. That sounds a lot like someone right in this class," Mr. Hollis spoke as Lauren narrowed her eyes at him. "Are you an astonishment Lauren?"
That was all it took for Lauren to turn around and leave the class, probably going to the beach to calm down. "Thank you Normani. You may sit down now," I was told and I did, wishing this chair could swallow me right up so I wouldn't have to feel embarrassed.
I wanted to chase after Lauren but I knew I shouldn't. I couldn't afford for my grade to be harmed by an action that would obviously let him know he was right.
For the rest of class, I was paralyzed in my seat, not listening or watching my peers present their pieces of writing. She had stood up for me and I hadn't done the same.
I should've yelled that it wasn't his business but I didn't. I didn't do anything. I really wish I would've.
It was near the end of class when the double doors swung open and the Dean appeared, his gaze hard and angered as Mr. Hollis looked up, nearly spitting out his tea. Behind him stood Lauren, an uninterested expression written all over her face as the Dean marched down the steps.
"Mr. Hollis, please join me," he spoke and everyone watched as our teacher's face became scared and shocked as he stood up. "Language Arts class, you are dismissed for the rest of the week. Mr. Hollis will not be back."
I watched as the Dean walked up and took Mr. Hollis with him to the main building, leaving us there. The whole class turned towards Lauren and cheered, running up and surrounding her.
There was a small smile on my lips as I pushed my things into my bag and stood up, getting out my row before walking up the stairs. Lauren locked eyes with me and I bashfully avoided her gaze before pushing the side door open and leaving.
I can't believe she did that for me.
