It's still nighttime, as I'm at the Salvatore Boarding House, looking at Stefan, and breathe heavily, and notice he's holding a wooden stake. "What are you? What are you?" I ask, and he nods. "You know." He says. "No, I don't." I say. "Yes, you do, or else you wouldn't be here. You're intelligent." He says, and I shake my head. "It's not possible. I'm based on studying and reality. But this? It can't be." I say, and he sets the stake down. "Everything you know.. and every belief you have is about to change. Are you ready for that?" He asks. "What.. are you?" I ask. "I'm a vampire." He says, and I swallow hard. "I.. I.. shouldn't have come." I say. "No. Please." He says, stepping forward, as I step backwards. "No. No." I say, and run past him, and he appears in front of me, and I almost fall, but he catches me, and I cry, and he lets me go, and I look behind me, and back to him. "How did you do that? Oh.. vampire speed." I say. "Please don't be afraid of me." He says, stepping closer, and I step backwards. "Let me go." I say. "No. Ethan, there's things that you have to know and understand." He says, and touches the sides of my arms. "Let me go!" I exclaim, and begin running off again. "Ethan, please." He says, and I open my car door, get in, and shut the door, locking it, and head to my house. I soon arrive to my house, and get out of my car, and close the door, and lock it back. I run to my house door, and unlock it, and drop the keys. "Shit!" I exclaim, and pick them up, and unlock the door, and run in, and lock it behind me, and run up the stairs to my bathroom. I look in the mirror, gasping. I open Jeremy's door some, and see him with headphones on, and can hear his music blarNH ving, and shut the door, and walk back over to my room, and sit on the edge of my bed, and take my shoes off, without my hands, and lay backwards, and sit up, and walk over to my open window, and walk back to my bed, and take my jacket off. "Ethan." Stefan says, and I gasp, and look at him, and turn around, and run to my door, and open it, and he closes it, and I flinch, crying. "I would never hurt you. You're safe with me, remember?" He asks. "All those animal attacks.." I say, looking at him. "Those people who died." I say. "No. That was Damon." He says. "Damon?" I ask. "Yes. I don't drink human blood." He says, shaking his head. "That's not how I choose to survive, but Damon does. I'll explain everything to you, but I beg you, Ethan, do not tell anybody." He says. "How can you ask me that? I mean, it's not like I'm going to." I say. "Because you knowing this is dangerous for so many reasons. You can hate me, but I need you to trust me." He says. "There's a.. video and audio file of you at the News Station. Type in Joseph Salvatore and Animal Attack. Nobody knows I was looking it up specifically, but I don't know how many copies are out there." I say. "Thank you." He says. "Just.. go. Just go, please. Go. If you're not going to hurt me, then you'll go." I say, crying more. "I never wanted this." He says, shaking his head, and takes a step backwards, and I turn to my door, and open it, and hear a whooshing sound, and turn back to the window, and see he's gone. I run over to it, and close it, and lock it. I sit down, and put my knees up, crying. I walk over to my bed, and just lay there, looking at the ceiling. I turn to my right, and cuddle my pillow. It's the next morning, as I'm holding my journal, and look out the window, and toss it on the bed. I head to my bathroom, and grab my toothbrush, and run it under water, and apply toothpaste, and turn the water off, and brush my teeth. I finish getting dressed in my black shirt and black jeans, and walk downstairs, and out my door. I'm outside the Grill, talking with Stefan, as he's in a light blue long sleeve. "You said you would explain everything. That's why I asked you to meet me here. When you Google, Vampire, you get a world of fiction. What's the reality?" I ask. "I can tell you whatever you want." He says. "I know you uh.. eat garlic." I say. "Yes." He says, nodding. "And somehow, Sunlight's not an issue." I say, and he looks up, and so do I, and see our waitress. "Hi, here are your drinks." She says, and sets our coffees down. "Thank you." I say, and take mine, and set it down, and she walks off. "We have rings that protect us." He says, showing me his ring, and sets his hand down. "Crucifixes?" I ask. "Decorative." He says. "Holy Water?" I ask. "Drinkable." He says. "Mirrors?" I ask. "Myth." He says. "You said you don't kill to survive." I say. "Animal blood keeps me alive, but not as strong as Damon. It can be very powerful." He says. "And yet you let him get involved with Tony?" I ask. "Forcing Damon not to do something is much more dangerous, believe me." He says. "He was hurting him." I say. "He was feeding on him. He was able to take away his memories of being bitten using a form of Mind Compulsion. He never knew what was happening to him." He says, shaking his head. "If he wanted to kill him, he would have." He says. "Is that supposed to make it ok?" I ask. "No. No, none of this is ok, Ethan. I know that." He says, and I look down, and he sits back, and I look at him. "Are there any others, aside from you and Damon?" I ask. "Not in Mystic Falls, not anymore." He says. "Not anymore?" I ask. "There was a time when this was.. very much aware of vampires, and it didn't end well for anybody." He says, shaking his head. "That's why it's important that you don't tell anyone." He says. "I already said I wouldn't." I say. "Ethan.. give me today." He says, and I look to my left. "I will answer any questions that you have, and when it's over, you can decide whatever you want to do with it. I just need you to know the truth. It'll be your choice." He says, as I look at him, and nod, and touch his right hand, gently, with my left, and he smiles. I'm driving through the woods, with him in the passenger seat. "Stop here." He says, and I stop the car, looking at him, and he opens his door, gets out, and shuts it, and I turn the car off, and open my door, get out, and shut it, as he's walking around. "What are we doing here?" I ask. "I want to show you something." He says. "In the middle of nowhere?" I ask, looking around. "This.. didn't used to be nowhere. Used to be my home." He says, and I walk over to him, and see an old fench podium. "It looks so.." I say, and he interrupts me. "Old? That's because they are." He says. "Wait. How long have you.." I say. "I've been seventeen years old since eighteen sixty four." He says. "Oh, my God." I say. "You said you wanted to know." He says. "So you're a hundred and sixty two?" I ask. "A hundred and sixty one. I'm not gonna hold anything back." He says, shaking his head, and I look around. "Half century before the Boarding House was even built, this was my Family Home." He says, and I can hear him walk off, and I follow him. "Damon and I.. we were both born here. The Salvatore Brothers, best of friends. We used to all play football together. Damon liked to play rough, and Alex always stole the ball." He says, as we're walking around. "You knew Alex in eighteen sixty four? Damon made it seem like.." I say, and he interrupts me. "Damon was trying to make you think that.. I was still heartbroken." He says, and looks at me. "He saw that I was happy with you, and he wanted to ruin it." He says. "All because you loved the same guy a hundred and forty five years ago? And wouldn't the townspeople kill you for being involved with the same gender?" I ask. "We knew how to keep it quiet. He wasn't just any boy." He says, smiling. "He choose me. I escorted him to the Founder's Ball, but we made it look like we were friends, at the original Lockwood Manison." He says, as I'm looking around, and look back at him. "The first Founder's Party.." I say, and he nods. "Where you signed the Registry." I say, and he nods more. "I didn't care that I had gotten something my brother wanted. I didn't even care if it hurt him. I only knew that I wanted Alex." He says. "So he was upset." I say, and sit on the stone bench, looking up at him. "That's the thing about Damon. He doesn't get mad. He just gets even. What Damon wants, Damon usually gets. I didn't know it at the time, but. Turns out that night.." He says, walking over to me. "Alex was with him, too." He says. "So he stole him from you, not the other way around?" I ask. "Turns out.. he wasn't ours to steal. I told him I loved him forever, and then I saw him for what he was. A vampire. The next morning, he compelled me not to be afraid. He wanted me, Damon, and himself, together. Forever. No rules. He could control my mind and Damon's. He compelled each of us to keep the secret from the other. Didn't work out forever, but.." He says, as I'm standing up, and picks up something. "Damon and I, looks like we're stuck with each other.. like it or not." He says, unwrapping the piece of cloth he picked up, and holds out a ring. "Is that Damon's ring?" I ask. "I took it from him, but I have to give it back." He says, and I approach him. "No. Don't, Stefan. Keep it hidden." I say. "Ethan, if I don't give it to him, he'll retaliate in the only way that he knows he can hurt me." He says. "And how is that?" I ask. "By hurting you." He says. We're back by my Jeep, and he opens the door for me, and I'm about to get in, and turn around, and look at him. "The Mind Control.. you said Alex used." He says, nodding. "Do you ever to that to me?" I ask. "No. That necklace." He says, pointing to the Golden Bullet necklace he gave me, and puts his hand down, and I look at my necklace. "It contains an herb called Vervain." He says, and I look up at him. "It protects you from being compelled. I wanted to protect you from Damon's influence. But I also wanted to.." He says, looking down, and back to me. "Protect you from me. Ethan, you should never take that necklace off. Because no matter what happens after today, no matter how you feel about me.. you'll know that you were free to make your own choice." He says, and I look at him, and kiss his cheek, and he touches my left hand, gently. We soon arrive home, and I open the door, and walk in. "Damn, Vick." Matt says, and we walk in to where he is, and I see him, Jeremy, and Vicki. "What's going on?" I ask. "She's really messed up." Matt says. "Ethan, back up." Stefan says, getting in front of me, and he touches the side of her face, as I'm backing up. "Vicki, look at me. Focus. You're gonna be fine. Everything's gonna be fine." He says, and turns to Jeremy and Matt. "Guys, take her to bed. Shut the blinds. She's gonna be okay. Come on." He says, as Matt takes her out of the room. "Come on." He says, as Jeremy's following them, and I turn around, looking at him as he approaches me. "You know what's wrong with her?" I ask. "Yeah." He says. "What is it?" I ask. "She's transitioning." He says. "Transitioning to what? A vampire?" I ask. "Yes. A vampire. Damon must have gotten to her. She's new. She hasn't completed her transformation yet." He says. "How. How does she do that?" I ask. "She has to feed on human blood." He says. "And what if she doesn't?" I ask. "She'll die." He says, and I begin walking around. "She may only have a few hours." He says, and I point up. "She's upstairs with him right now." I say. "It's ok." He says, as I put my hand down. "She doesn't know what's happening to her yet." He says. "So when is she going to know?" I ask. "Right now, she doesn't remember anything. A part of her is still human, but slowly, the deeper she gets into the transition, the memories will start to come back." He says, as I run my hands through my hair. "And then she'll know she has to make the choice." He says, and I put my hands down, and turn around, looking at him. "The same choice you made?" I ask, and he looks down. "I'm sorry." I say, and turn around and walk off to the kitchen, and put stuff away. "Vicki! Vicki!" Matt exclaims, as I turn around, and see him running out the open door. "Stefan!" I exclaim, and run after Matt, and he's next to me. "She was fine, and then she just. She just freaked out." Jeremy says, as I look at him. "I'm gonna go look for her. Call me if you hear anything." Matt says, as I look at him. "I can track her." Stefan whispers in my ear. "Go." I say, and he runs off. Jeremy and I are in the kitchen, as it's nighttime, and I hand him a plate and a mug. "Maybe we should check in with Matt." He says, and I walk back to the table, and grab another plate. "He'll call when he finds her." I say, walking back over to him, and hand him the plate. "Well, what are we supposed to do?" He asks. "We wait. We're supposed to wait." I say. "I don't know what's wrong with her." He says. "She'll be fine. It'll all be fine." I say, and my doorbell rings, and I walk over to it, and see Damon, and close it, quickly, but he keeps it open, and pushes it completely. "Jeremy, go upstairs." I say, and he walks off, and Damon smiles at me. "You're afraid of me. I'm gonna go out on a limb here and guess. Stefan finally fessed up." He says. "Stay away from me." I say. "Hey, hey, hey, there's no need to be rude. I'm just looking for Stefan. May I come in? Oh, wait. Of course I can. I've been invited." He says, and walks in, as I step backwards, and he closes the door, walking around. "We can cut to the chase if you want. I'm not gonna kill you right now. That wouldn't serve my greater agenda." He says, crossing his arms. "So.. where's Stefan?" He asks. "He's out looking for Vicki." I say, glaring. "Don't look at me with those judgey little eyes, Smartass. Girl's gonna thank me for what I did to her." He says, touching my chin, as I turn my face to the right, and he steps closer. "Did you thank Alex?" I ask, and he looks down, and back to me. "Mm." He says, and turns around, walking. "Got the whole life story, huh?" He asks. "I got enough." I say, taking a few steps. "Oh, I doubt that. Tell my brother I'm looking for him." He says, walking to the door, and opens it, and smiles at me, and turns around, and walks out the door. "Oh, tip for later." He says, turning back. "Be careful who you invite in the house." He says, smiling, and shuts the door. I'm outside on the porch, waiting, and hear footsteps, and look up, and see Stefan bleeding, and get up, and run over to him. "You're bleeding." I say, and touch his shirt. "No, it's okay. It's okay. I'm okay." He says, and I hold his hands, and look up at him. "I couldn't stop her. I tried." He says. "What does that mean? Is she a vampire?" I ask. "She fed, and then I lost her." He says. "Oh, my God." He says, and I turn around. "I'll take care of it. I'll find her, and I will show her that she can live like I do. I will make sure that she does not hurt anybody, Ethan. I promise you." He says, as I look at him. "What do I tell my brother and. And Matt?" I ask. "We'll come up with a story." He says. "You mean we'll come up with a lie." I say, as tears drop, and he nods. "I'm so sorry." He says. "I gave you today just like you asked. And I understand that you would never do anything to hurt me, and I promise that I will keep your secret, like I already said, but.. I.. can't be with you, Stefan. I'm sorry. I. I just.. can't. And it hurts." I say, and he looks down, and back up to me, and I walk to my door, and open it, and walk in, and close it, and lay my head back on the door, and I gasp, crying, and there's a pain in my chest, and I slowly fall to the ground, crying more, holding my stomach.
