Logan sat in silence as Finn, Colin, Robert and Odette erupted, all suddenly speaking over each other. Odette tore the contract out of Roberts hands and began to alternate between reading it and waving it emphatically as she continued to speak in rapid fire French.Rory sat silently and watched Logan, while her father watched her. The minutes ticked by.
Finally, Logan turned tortured eyes to Rory. "This is not how I wanted this to happen." He finally spoke quietly to Rory.
"This isn't how either of us planned for things to happen. One minute we are both going our own way, making separate plans for the future. Then ... well, we made a baby. A whole actual person. That changes everything" Rory replied.
"But I feel like I've taken something away from you. You had such plans for your life, and now ..." Logan shrugged.
"Yeah, okay. And I've had 10 years for that, haven't I? And where did it get me? Not with a career that I'm terribly enthusiastic about. But Logan, I don't regret this baby for a moment. I admit that I was thrown, that this child was not expected, but that makes this baby no less loved. This is what excites me now. We are going to be parents together, and we clearly love each other. This isn't the worst thing that we could do." Rory replied.
Chris sat quietly and watched his oldest daughter speaking with her heart on her sleeve. He pulled out his cell phone and quietly sent a text to Lorelai. He knew Rory and Logan had basically forgotten everyone else in the room, perhaps everyone else in the world.
<Are you still listening to this?>
<Yeah. I think she's forgotten that I'm on the line. I can really only hear her over the fracas in the background. Does she have the 'tiptoeing through a mine field' look on her face?>
<No. She's frighteningly calm. I've never seen her like this before.>
<Oh. So, her minds made up. How about the boy wonder? How's he doing?>
<Poleaxed.>
<Huh. I though he'd be dragging her to the nearest vicar!>
<He keeps saying that he's afraid that they won't work out, that he's ruining things for Rory or that this will negatively impact the baby. Lor, he's you!>
<Funny boy>
<Seriously, we had this exact conversation 33 years ago when I was trying to convince you that we should just get married and make everyone happy. Every thing Logan is saying is exactly what you said to me back then.>
<He's not wrong! A stupid contract is no reason to rush into marriage.>
<I know what you are saying, but still, Lor! This is what she wants. She's a grown woman now.>
<Doesn't mean I have to like it!>
The room suddenly fell silent as Rory moved to take a seat next to Logan on the couch. She sat quietly, back straight while Logan sat with his head in his hands, elbows resting on his knees. Rory cautiously put a hand on his back and began to rub gently, comforting him as he was obviously upset.
Logan suddenly snapped up. He stared at Rory for a second before grabbing her hand and standing. Rory instantly stood beside him and they communicated silently for a moment before Rory nodded and turned, and led Logan to the front door. She opened the door and they both left without a word.
"Well. Ok, what's next?" Colin asked.
"Well, I don't know about the rest of you, but I could use a drink. Scotch, anyone?" Christopher asked as he headed for his fully stocked bar.
"You know, the resemblance is actually uncanny!" Finn declared as he nodded enthusiastically and followed him to the bar.
"Resemblance?" Christopher asked
"Yeah, between you and Rory. She always knows what to do to make a situation better as well!" Finn replied.
Christopher grinned as he handed Finn's drink to him. "Or at least bearable!" He toasted with Finn and they turned to the others in the living area. Colin shrugged and began to make his way to join them at the bar, while Robert and Odette continued to argue in French.
