I visited Jimmy in the hospital during his first weeks in the hospital. It was difficult, he had severe panic attacks and had to be sedated 24/7. I took off work for the next couple weeks to be there for him and to take myself to physical therapy. Three weeks of physical therapy for me and hospital stays and therapies for Jimmy later, we were both free! "How are you feeling now, sweetheart?" I asked Jimmy as we walked to my car. He hugged me and said, "Much, much better. What about you?" "Same." I said as we each got in the car. We talked more as we drove home. As soon as we pulled into the driveway, we saw the kids and Mrs. Hermann standing outside. There was a 'Welcome Home' banner hanging on the porch. We immediately parked and got out. We all reunited and celebrated.
Later that night, I woke up to hear the baby coughing and crying. I rushed to his room and felt his head. "Oh my God!!! Jimmy! Wake up! Call Mrs. Hermann!" I yelled. I picked the baby up and rushed downstairs. Mrs. Hermann was already at the front door. I opened it and said, "I'm so sorry! We need to take the baby to the hospital! Please stay here with the kids.." "It's okay, honey." Mrs. Hermann assured me as Jimmy and I rushed to the car. The baby and I cried on the way to the hospital. We pulled up to the emergency room entrance, I rushed in with the baby while Jimmy parked the car. "Caroline? What's wrong?!" April asked. "Kelly is really sick. He has a fever. He's coughing stuff up." I said between gasps and tears. April escorted us to a room and I laid Kelly down on the bed. I sat by the bed while I let April and the nurses work on him. Jimmy arrived shortly after. I immediately got up and he embraced me. We walked to the waiting room and sat down.
An hour later, April found us and told us, "Kelly is okay now, but we admitted him for pneumonia." We thanked April and walked to the NICU. Kelly was in an incubator on oxygen....tubes were attached to drain the excess fluids from his lungs. It was a scary sight. "M-my baby...oh Kelly. Please heal, buddy. We need you." I whispered. I stayed while Jimmy took an Uber to work. I prayed, cried, slept...all in a cycle. April and Dr. Charles came back to check on him. They gave a sigh of relief. I immediately stood up. "Is he better?" I asked. "Yes, he is. He responded successfully to the treatments. You and Jimmy saved his life by coming here." Dr. Charles told me. "Thank you!" I replied, hugging him and April. Kelly came home with me a minute later. I fed him and put him back in his crib and then I ate breakfast, took a shower, brushed my teeth, and got ready for work.
