"Oh my God! It hurts!" I yelled as Halstead performed a skin biopsy. "You're almost done, Caroline. Just hang on...and breathe." Halstead assured me. Jimmy held my hand while Boden, Hermann, Severide, and Stella stood in the back of the room. I squeezed Jimmy's hand and focused on breathing. The pain was so excruciating that I passed out from it. I woke up an hour later with Jimmy, Boden, Hermann, Severide, and Stella still there. "You alright?" Hermann asked me. "Y-yeah, I'm okay." I replied. Halstead came back to the room with the results. "You okay? You gave us a scare." Halstead asked me. I laughed and said, "I'm fine. Sorry about that." "It's ok," Halstead assured me, "I have all good news. While you were out, I talked to Boden about the bone marrow transplant since you both have the same blood type. He agreed and signed the papers." I looked at Boden and then at Jimmy and said, "That's great! When is the procedure?" Boden smiled and said, "Today....in thirty minutes." I reached out to Boden and he leaned down and hugged me. "Thank you, Chief!" I said as happy tears filled my eyes. "You're welcome." He replied. Dr. Rhodes knocked on the doorway. "You ready, Chief?" He asked Boden. "Yes." He replied. "Let's get you prepped then." Rhodes told Boden. Before they left, I told Boden that I would be praying for him. "Thanks sweetheart." Boden said. I nodded...then they left.
Two hours of praying and waiting later, Dr. Rhodes came back and told us that Boden is out of surgery and recovering. Then, before Halstead rolled me to the OR to receive the blood, Jimmy, Hermann, Severide, and Stella prayed over me...Jimmy led the prayer. Afterwards, it was time. I was rolled into the OR, lifted onto the table, and went under the anesthesia. Three hours later, I woke up in the same recovery room as Boden. "Hey Champ...how you feeling?" He asked me. "Good," I replied, "you?" He chuckled and said, "Sore, but good." We each fell asleep after a little bit more talking.
I woke up with Boden sitting beside me. "Hey Chief. How long have you been sitting there?" I chuckled. Chief chuckled and said, "A minute." I playfully hit him in the shoulder and laughed out, "You psycho." We laughed. We heard a knock on the door, it was Matt, Gabby, and their baby. "Hey you three! Come on in!" I said as I motioned them in. "How are you two doing?" Gabby asked. "We're doing good." I replied. "That's good. By the way, we were discharged yesterday. We decided to go home and get cleaned up." Gabby told us. "That's great!" Boden replied. As we were talking, Jimmy and the kids came in. "Hi my sweethearts!,"I said as each of my kids and Jimmy hugged me. "....I missed y'all so much." "We missed you too, Mama." Sylvia and the twins said. Jimmy handed the baby to me and I hugged and kissed him. "Daddy told me about what happened." Hope said as she held my hand. "I'm okay now, sweetheart. Dr. Halstead and Chief Boden are helping me get better." I assured her. "That's great!" She replied. Sylvia turned and hugged Boden, "Thank you, Chief!" Boden hugged her back and said, "You're welcome." Sylvia and Boden stepping aside to talk about the transplant. Sylvia looked delighted. I looked at Jimmy and told him, "Looks like Sylvia is going to be a great paramedic...or a doctor. Whatever she chooses." We laughed a little and he replied, "That she is." I looked at baby Kelly then the twins, smiled, and told them, "Y'all have a great and bright future ahead of you, too." Kelly giggled and cooed. The twins hugged me. Two hours later, Jimmy told the kids, "It's time to go home! We'll see Mommy and Chief later." I kissed all four kids, handed the baby to Jimmy, then they left. I looked at Gabby and Matt with tears in my eyes, "What happened these past couple days and today is an absolute miracle, but I almost lost my life. Please don't take y'all's lives for granted." Matt, Gabby...who held her baby tightly, and Chief hugged me. There wasn't a dry eye in that moment. "You didn't take your life for granted. You have another chance thanks to Chief and Halstead." Matt tearfully told me. "Thanks, Matt." I said, smiling and wiping my tears. After more tears, talking, and laughter, Matt, Gabby, and their baby left. Boden sat back in his bed and we talked a little more.
